Responsibilities: 

  • Monitors and assesses the physical status of the patient through personal observation, interaction and Pre-operative phone calls.
  • Asses and responds to the individual, psychosocial and spiritual needs of the patient and significant others.
  • Acts as a patient advocate in the coordination of patient care.
  • Uses Preoperative interviewing and assessment skills to identify possible or actual problems prior to surgery and report to Anesthesiologist and or Surgeon
  • Carefully reviews the patient’s current and past health history, lab values, psychological status and understanding of the procedure.
  • Demonstrates understanding and interpretation of diagnostic measures such as lab tests, radiology exams and ekgs.
  • Identifies goals for the individual patient and communicates these goals to others involved in the patient’s care. 
  • Ability to lead the OR team and to delegate as needed.  Assists with room set up and turn over.
  • Must have knowledge of the principles of asepsis, infection control and universal precautions.
  • Must have knowledge of surgical instrumentation, equipment specific to the Operating Room as well as cleaning of the same.  Helps with positioning of patient in the OR while maintaining patient safety.
  • Adheres to Surgeon’s orders, consents, and all AORN standards prior to induction of anesthesia.
  • Assists the Anesthesiologist in preparing the patient for induction of anesthesia.
  • Reports and documents information accurately and in a timely manner on patient’s chart.
  • Functions as Circulating RN in an OR setting.
  • Able to recover Post Anesthesia patients in PACU Phase One and Phase Two.
  • Must have ability to closely monitor patients post anesthesia and be able to determine a change in patient’s status and report to Surgeon/Anesthesiologist immediately.  Strong knowledge of Aldrete Score.
  • Assist with Postoperative phone calls, follow ups, dressing changes, etc.
  • Assists with pathology and specimen collection and documentation.
  • Helps OR team with inventory and stocking of supplies.  Keeps up with PAR levels in Pre-OP, OR, and PACU.
  • Seeks guidance, direction and assistance where needed.  Follows Center Policy and Procedures at all times.
  • Ensures that the code carts are fully equipped, defibrillator are in operational readiness, check for medication and supply outdates, and that daily and monthly checks are completed.
  • Works under the Supervision of the Director of Nursing and Management.
  • AORN certification preferred, must maintain current NY/NJ RN license.  Must have current IV certification, AHA ALCS and BLS certifications.
