A TOUCH OF SPRING ART SHOW Reception: Saturday, April 14 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. Featuring the works of: Jean Arena-Barbieri, Susan Nadel and Sheila Thompson To ensure that “April showers bring May flowers,” the Quogue Library Art Gallery is pleased to present three Long Island artists’ interpretations of spring. Now living full-time on the east end of Long Island, Jean Arena-Barbieri has moved beyond the figures and portraits that dominated her canvases for many years. Her recent oil paintings reflect the bounty of nature that her local surroundings offer. Recalling JMW Turner’s extraordinary journey from realism to abstraction, Arena-Barbieri expresses an excitement about exploring new directions. “I eagerly await where they will lead me and what will be revealed on my canvases.” Susan Nadel’s works emphasize her unabashed joy of color. It is the unpredictably of color that is the driving impulse for her watercolor and multi-media paintings. Nadel says, “I love the transparency of color and the challenge it presents. When I focus on color, my brain switches over to an intuitive state – I’m almost not thinking; I’m reacting to what I see on paper.” Sheila Thompson gathers inspiration from her watercolors from spending summers in Maine and the east end of Long Island. “I look at my surroundings as a collection of shapes and colors; values of lights and darks and enjoy expressing these images in my works.” She is a member of the Manhasset Art Association and the Aquarelle Watercolor Society of Long Island. Elizabeth Anne Hartman and Judith McDermott chair this show, which will be on exhibit at the Quogue Library art gallery from April 1-29.
