Flight of the Butterfly, Amazing Aerialists: Hands-on Workshop: Family/Children Ages 8 & Older
Workshop Leader: Xylia Serafy, South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) Environmental Educator

Don’t be fooled by the erratic bobbing and weaving you see when watching a butterfly flutter from flower to flower— butterflies are master flight manipulators. Their seemingly accidental movements have a very important purpose—to shake off predators. Unlike most insects, butterflies don’t fly with a constant body angle; they are continually rotating and tipping their body, even if they’re only travelling in one direction. Come learn how unique butterflies really are, how they fly, and why they fly the way they do. Afterward, build your very own rubberband-powered fluttering butterfly and see if you have what it takes to fly your butterfly to a flower to collect nectar. Material fee: $3

Advance reservations are required. Programs free for SoFo members. Non-members: $15/ adult, $10/child 3-12 years, 2 and under free. Fees include free admission to the museum on the day of the event.
