Exploring Vernal (Temporary) Ponds: Adults/Children 6+
Program Leader: Xylia Serafy, South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO) Environmental Educator

Vernal ponds are ephemeral—or temporary—seasonal wetlands that dry up at some time during the year. They form in depressions in the earth and are often found in forest settings. They range in size from puddles to shallow lakes. Of utmost importance is that these ponds, or pools, are absent of fish and are therefore home to what are called obligate species—organisms and species that are completely dependent on these ponds for parts of their life cycle. Join Xy on this adventure to visit some vernal ponds and find out what organisms and species rely on these ponds to provide an essential breeding habitat to begin their life cycle.

SOFO Members: Programs are free unless otherwise specified. Non-Members: Adults $15, Children $10 (Ages 3-12), Ages 2 & under free. This fee includes admission to the museum, in addition to the program.

Advanced reservations are required for all events. For more information, reservations, and directions to meeting places, please call: (631) 537-9735.
