The East Hampton boys and girls cross country teams got in a good tune-up for the Section XI Championships, otherwise known as the state qualifier, by competing at the Division Championships at Sunken Meadow Park in Kings Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Ryan Fowkes competed in the championship boys race and finished second among fellow Division III runners, 18th overall in Suffolk County, in 17:23. Fowkes, a senior, was the only Bonacker who competed in the championship race due to his qualifying times from throughout the year. The rest of the Bonackers competed in the team qualifier race. Evan Masi, a freshman, finished that race in 18:17. Since East Hampton finished the season in the top six of Class B—it finished fifth—and had a five-man average below 19:30, it will compete as a team in the Class B state qualifier race, which is November 2 back at Sunken Meadow. It’ll be a tight race with fellow East End teams Southampton and Westhampton Beach, along with Kings Park, Mount Sinai and a few others.

Sophomores Ava Engstrom and Bella Tarbet competed in the girls championship race. Engstrom finished 10th overall in 20:56 and Tarbet finished 15th in 21:42. Emma Hren competed in the team qualifier and finished in a personal best by over a minute in 23:00, which placed her eighth in the division and 27th overall, but because she couldn’t finish in 22:30 or below, she won’t be able to compete in the state qualifier with Engstrom and Tarbet. Megan “Mimi” Fowkes finished the team qualifier race in 27:08, Leteisha Peters finished in 27:22, and Sydney Salamy crossed in 27:35.

NYC Carnival

Both East Hampton teams competed in the New York City Cross Country Carnival at Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx on Saturday.

Ryan Fowkes placed 12th overall in the varsity boys 4,000-meter ‘A’ race in 13:47. Frank Bellucci placed 50th in 15:10.

Engstrom finished seventh overall in the girls varsity race in 16:27 and Tarbet placed ninth in 16:39. Mimi Fowkes finished in 21:33, Salamy finished in 22:02, Stella McCormack crossed in 23:53 and Marlena Bellucci completed the race in 24:15.
