More than 100 participants made their way to Ditch Plains Beach on Saturday morning for the 11th annual Montauk Ocean Swim Challenge, hosted by the Montauk Playhouse Community Center Foundation.
The Montauk Ocean Swim Challenge offers three distance categories for swimmers of all ages and abilities. The race moves along Montauk’s scenic coastline, and concludes at Ditch Plains Beach.
Michal Petrzela won the 5K swim in 1:16:27, followed by Woods Buckley in 1:19:30, and Jen Schumacher, the top female finisher, third overall, at 1:21:46. Lori King finished fourth overall at 1:22:03, and finishing fifth overall was James Damron in 1:23:52.
Margaret Tato won the 1-mile race in 25:20. She was followed by Thomas McGlade, the first male to finish the mile, second overall, in 26:15. Sophia Swanson placed third overall in 26:33, with Ava Solido finishing fourth in 27:01. Frannie Michaels placed fifth overall in 27:02.
Peter Mottolese won the half mile course in 12:32, while Summer Jones, finished second overall, first among girls, in 12:50. Anton Srdanovic finished third overall in 12:59, Sam Delaney finished fourth in 13:53 and Thinley Edwards finished fifth in 14:05.
Proceeds from the Montauk Ocean Swim Challenge benefit construction of the future Aquatic Center at the Montauk Playhouse Community Center and is organized by the East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue Squad.
