The 12th annual Peg Larkins 5K was held at the Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School on Sunday morning. More than 100 participants, more than 30 business sponsors and 12 family sponsors took part in the race, which is run in memory of Peg Larkins, who died in September 2007. She worked at the Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School for more than 30 years and was very active in the community.

This year the race was organized by John Barry of Remsenburg, Kevin Toolan of Remsenburg and Craig Catalanotto of Speonk, and there was enough money raised for three separate $750 scholarships to former Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary students who are graduating from Westhampton Beach High School. This year’s recipients were William Andreopoulos, Natalie Gosnell and Julia Worthington.

Nick Berglin, 22, of Hampton Bays—just about a month after graduating from SUNY Oneonta—won this year’s race in 17:07.74, a mile pace of 5:31. Sean Jordan, 17, of Westhampton, finished right behind Berglin in 18:33.42, and James Buono, 14, of East Quogue finished third overall in 19:49.02.

Isabella DiPalermo, 16, of Mount Sinai, placed fourth overall and was the first female to cross the finish line in 20:01.50. Heather Wright, 45, of Westhampton finished right behind DiPalermo in 20:16.66, and Ashley Farrell Coughlin, 27, of Westhampton Beach, was the third woman to finish (10th overall) in 22:31.29.
