One person was killed in an accident, police confirmed on Tuesday.
Police said Jennifer Russo, 38, of East Hampton was driving a Volvo SUV when she crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the box truck head-on.
Ms. Russo was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Thomas Infantolino, 53, was driving the box truck alone, police said, although earlier reports suggested he had a passenger. The impact from the accident caused Mr. Infantolino to become trapped in the truck.
Emergency crews responded and had to cut Mr. Infantolino free from the truck. He was then transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where he was treated for severe leg injuries.
No charges have been filed in connection with the accident, police said.
Police said plans for a Suffolk County Medevac helicopter to fly one of the victims to the hospital had to be aborted because of hazardous weather conditions and the victim was instead transported by ambulance.
The accident was a head-on collision, police said.
Two people were in the box truck. Police could not say which person in the truck, the passenger or the driver, was injured, but police said the person sustained severe leg injuries.
Montauk Highway remained closed as of 3:20 p.m.
