The Westhampton Beach boys tennis team’s top singles player, Josh Kaplan, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Suffolk County Individual Tournament over the weekend before losing to the top seed, Alex Rzehak of Harborfields in a 6-4, 6-4 match.
Kaplan was one of three Hurricanes singles players who qualified for the 32-player draw at counties, along with Trevor Hayes and Andre Insalaco. Hayes and Insalaco did not fare as well, both losing in the first round. Hayes, seeded 21st, lost 6-4, 6-3, to no. 12 James Mooney of East Islip, while Insalaco, seeded 26th, was downed 6-2, 6-0, by no. 7 Evan Ruppolo of Patchogue/Medford.
Westhampton Beach’s only doubles pair in the county tournament had an even shorter appearance. Jake Ongania and Kasper Buchen, seeded 15th, were forced to default to the second-seeded team of Jack Carney and Henry Samson of Bay Shore because Buchen was feeling sick.
With the county individual tournament over, Westhampton Beach was turning its attention to the Suffolk County Team Tournament. The Hurricanes were seeded ninth out of 24 teams and were set to host no. 24 Sachem on May 14 at 4 p.m. The winner of that match was set to visit no. 8 Half Hollow Hills West on May 15 for a 4 p.m. match. The winner of that contest advances to the quarterfinals and, barring a major upset, a date with top seed Half Hollow Hills East on May 16.
