Amagansett Fire Department Referendum Passes

Oct 11, 2011 11:48 AM

Amagansett voters on Tuesday approved the Amagansett Fire District’s $2.8 million plan to purchase a property next to the firehouse.

The referendum passed 140-102 according to a post by Past Chief David DiSunno on the fire department’s website.

“We’re just pleased that it passed,” said Fire Commissioner Jack Emptage.

Members of the Board of Fire Commissioners, who are tentatively planning to expand emergency medical services in the next few years, said they wanted to reserve the 2-acre property on Montauk Highway for an ambulance facility.

“It’s an aging population,” Mr. Emptage said. “We’re getting more and more calls. Eventually, and this is down the road, we’re going to have at least some paid support for the ambulance,” in the form of paid emergency medical technicians.

The fire department would use the facility to house an additional ambulance and provide living space for emergency medical technicians, as well as extra parking. In the meantime, firefighters will use an existing building on the property—the former site of the Pacific East restaurant—for training.

The fire department must close on the property “by the middle of next month,” Mr. Emptage said. He said there is no specific time line for building an ambulance facility.

“I think we’re seriously down the road by about a few years,” he said.

Now that we know (a day before the vote) that the prior owners are really just recouping a couple of million dollars after "buying it back" for $500,000 - for a place which couldn't be used for a commercial purpose anyway - i wonder if any of the "yays" want to take back their vote? And Sylivia Overby was all for it . . . more corruption. This "deal" reeks.
