One of the Hamptons homes designed by the late architect Charles Gwathmey, who revolutionized beach house design, is on the market

The residence at 130 Bluff Road in Amagansett has a price tag of $4,850,000 and is represented by Douglas Elliman.

In addition to this being one of only two properties on Bluff Road with a grandfathered tennis court on a 1-acre lot, there are 5 bedrooms and 3 baths inside 1,934 square feet. The living area has a soaring double-height ceiling with large windows on all sides. The residence has two levels with ocean views from the roof deck—the Atlantic is only a quarter-mile away. The exterior offers plenty of open space to entertain and an in-ground swimming pool.

Gwathmey passed away in 2009. The North Carolina native—the son of the painter Robert Gwathmey and the photographer Rosalie Gwathmey—studied under the legendary architect Paul Rudolph at Yale University. His first foray in the Hamptons came in 1965 when, not yet a licensed architect, he designed a house and studio for his parents in Amagansett.

During the next 12 years, having obtained the required license, Gwathmey designed 21 houses and renovations, several of them in the Hamptons. In subsequent years his firm, Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects, did commercial projects too, including the Museum of Contemporary Art of North Miami and the Astor Place Tower and the renovation of the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Along the way, Gwathmey collected many prestigious awards and found time to teach at the Pratt Institute, among other institutions.

When the most recent deed transfers landed in email inboxes last week, jaws dropped in shock and awe when viewers realized that, toward the top of the pile, the sale price for 408 Further Lane in Amagansett was not a typo. It was a record-shattering $115 million — marking the most expensive single residential parcel to ever sell on the East End, though it is unclear which brokerages were involved in the off-market, nine-figure deal that closed on July 31.
