Bicyclist Hit By Truck In Amagansett And Medevaced To Stony Brook University Hospital On Thursday

Aug 20, 2019 4:14 PM

A box truck struck and injured a bicyclist at the intersection of Cross Highway and Montauk Highway in Amagansett just before noon on Thursday, August 15.

East Hampton Town Councilman David Lys was driving toward Amagansett when he saw the bicyclist get knocked off his bicycle in front of Brent’s Deli. Mr. Lys said the accident happened 20 feet in front of him at 11:54 a.m.

As cars drove by, Ms. Lys said, the man, who appeared to be in his 30s and did not have a helmet on at the time of the accident, had blood running down his face. The man was “quivering” while lying in the street, near the crosswalk, according to Mr. Lys.

According to Lieutenant Peter Powers of the East Hampton Town Police Department, the cyclist suffered head injuries. The driver was not charged, Lt. Powers said.

The lieutenant, who would not identify either person involved in the accident, added that an independent witness said the driver had a green light and that the bicyclist continued to ride and collided with the vehicle.

After Amagansett EMTs arrived on the scene, the injured cyclist was medevaced to Stony Brook University Hospital, the nearest Level 1 trauma center.

Mr. Lys said the bicyclist was coherent after the accident, and was able to speak.

“The volunteer EMTs from Amagansett were spectacular. They got him up and medevaced in a short time frame,” Mr. Lys said, adding that the highway was closed for a short time as he and another man diverted traffic toward Abraham’s Path.
