A New Scoville Hall Is Rising In Amagansett

Scoville Hall in Amagansett is beginning to rise again.

Ben Krupinski is overseeing construction of a new building to replace the 1925 Scoville Hall, a community meeting place destroyed by fire in October 2011. After years of delay due to an insurance dispute, workers were making significant progress this week, despite the cold, in framing the structure.

“We don’t have the crocuses popping up, but the building’s popping up,” the Reverend Steven Howarth of the Amagansett Presbyterian Church, which owns Scoville Hall, said on Thursday.

Riverhead Building Supply is among a great many donors chipping in materials or services, from porta-potties to excavation to cement, “which is making a tremendous difference,” he said.

Ultimately, the insurer and the church settled on a figure of almost $1.4 million, while about another $500,000 needed to be raised in donations for the new building. Its exterior is designed to resemble that of the old hall, but the interior will look vastly different to meet current-day needs.

With any luck, the new hall will be completed by the end of this year. “We’re just very excited that the project is up and rolling,” Rev. Howarth said this week.
