December starts on Saturday for the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons, whose monthly lineup begins that day with a roundtable program on “chameleon evergreens” and foraging in the garden for holiday decorations.
From 10 a.m. to noon, Pamela Harwood will moderate a discussion about evergreen trees and shrubs that change color in winter, and thus can refresh the look of a yard, as well as a discussion about holiday cheer that can be brought indoors from the garden. In addition, HAH members will field general questions about gardening.
Admission is free, and the event will be held in the alliance’s library, which is in the lower level of the Bridgehampton Community House.
On Sunday, December 11, at 2 p.m., also at the Community House, alliance members will turn their attention to Costa Rica, “where the rain forest meets the sea,” the subject of an illustrated presentation by Dennis Schrader, an expert on plant production and design with a wholesale greenhouse on the North Fork as well as large-scale commercial and estate landscapes in southern Florida, California and Costa Rica.
Admission to this talk is $10 and is free for HAH members. A holiday party will follow; those who attend have been asked to bring a sweet or savory finger food to contribute.
Last, but not least, the alliance’s book group will meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 17. “No need to read the books yourself,” notes a press release, “the three presenters do that for you!”
Book group meetings are free to attend and take place in the HAH library on the ground floor of the Bridgehampton Community House.
