UPDATE: World Pie Will Reopen Sunday After Chimney Fire Saturday Night

Apr 16, 2018 7:35 AM

UPDATE: Saturday, 10 p.m.

World Pie owner Michael Mannino said the restaurant will be open on Sunday after a chimney fire that erupted in the exhaust system of the Bridgehampton eatery's wood-burning oven on Saturday night was quickly extinguished by members of the Bridgehampton Fire Department.

"We got very lucky, very lucky," Mr. Mannino said in the restaurant after the fire was extinguished.

"These guys were just great, thank God for them," he added, nodding to Bridgehampton Fire Department firefighters who were still lingering outside the building. "They got here in about a minute and a half. We are so grateful to them."

Mr. Mannino attributed the fire to Saturday night's strong winds, which he said caused a "blowback" in the oven's chimney. But thanks to the firefighters' quick response, the flames were mostly contained to the steel chimney. The roof suffered some damage and there was some water damage in the area around the pizza oven, which Mr. Mannino said won't be operational tomorrow but will be back in service as soon as possible.

It will be three years next month since a fire broke out in the basement of World Pie on Memorial Day weekend, forcing the restaurant to close for much of the summer season.

The restaurant was packed with diners when the fire broke out shortly before 8 p.m.

"They said: Everyone out of the restaurant—now," one of the patrons, Christine Hoyt, said.

There were no injuries reported in the fire.

Bridgehampton volunteer firefighters were responding to a chimney fire at the World Pie restaurant on Main Street in that hamlet on Saturday at about 8:40 p.m.
