A 45-year-old man from New Jersey reportedly jumped off the former Bridgehampton Race Circuit bridge at The Bridge, a private golf club in Noyac, on the morning of July 5, in what police said appeared to be a suicide.

Southampton Town Police Lieutenant Susan Ralph declined to release the man’s name, only offering that he was not an employee or a member of the golf club. She added that he had been invited to play golf at the 18-hole course earlier that day; she declined to identify who invited him.

Police, as well as officials from the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office, responded to the scene near Terry Drive at about 10:11 a.m. Police are not releasing any additional details about the situation.

An official from The Bridge, who declined to be identified, said that the bridge serves as memorabilia from the former Bridgehampton Race Circuit at the site, which closed in 1997. It is no longer a functioning bridge, he said.

He added that the victim would have had to climb up to the bridge, noting that the golf course does not connect to it and there are no stairs leading up. “There’s no easy access to it,” he said.

The golf course immediately closed after the incident and reopened on Friday, July 6.

Robert Rubin, the owner of the golf course, could not be immediately reached for comment.
