Hampton Classic Delayed Until Wednesday Due To Storm

Aug 30, 2011 1:20 PM

In anticipation of Hurricane Irene’s arrival on Long Island this weekend, officials at the Hampton Classic Horse Show were forced to push back the start of the 36th annual event to Wednesday, August 31.

“Our conversations with the National Weather Service and the Town of Southampton’s head of emergency management have made it clear to us that we need to be prepared for hurricane force winds,” said Shanette Barth Cohen, Executive Director of the Hampton Classic, in a press release.

Events from Monday and Tuesday will be rescheduled for later in the week; however, Monday’s ASPCA Adoption Day has been cancelled, but a “virtual adoption day” is in the works. The release also said that “some of the events” from Sunday’s opening day would be rescheduled. The $250,000 FTI Grand Prix is still set for Sunday, September 4.

According to the Classic’s media office, officials were finalizing the adjusted schedule as of 11:15 a.m. Friday. A revised schedule of events is available athamptonclassic.com and on the Classic’s Facebook page.

Barth Cohen indicated that tents and stalls will be taken down Friday and reconstructed early next week. Horses, vendors and boutiques are permitted to arrive Tuesday at noon.
