Thiele's District Would Gain Southold, Shelter Island Under Proposed Plan

New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr.’s legislative district, which currently encompasses the South Fork and southeastern Brookhaven Town, would gain the towns of Southold and Shelter Island from Assemblyman Dan Losquadro’s district under a plan proposed by a redistricting task force.

Under the redistricting plan, Mr. Thiele’s district would lose the communities of Mastic, Mastic Beach and Shirley, which would become part of the 3rd Assembly district in southeastern Brookhaven Town, currently represented by Assemblyman Dean Murray.

If the proposed map is finalized, the population of Mr. Thiele’s district would shrink from 142,833 to 128,929. The shifting lines are driven by a population increase in the 2010 Census that caused Long Island to gain a 22nd Assembly district, Mr. Thiele said, which means that each district would be slightly smaller... more

Makes sense!

And I hear that Fred holds his nose when he travels to the Mastics anyhow, so they'll be better represented.

"The leader whose thinking is constrained within well-worn ruts, who is completely governed by his established passions and prejudices, who is incapable of thinking either gray or free, and who can’t even appropriate the creative imagination and fresh ideas of those around him, is as anachronistic and ineffective as the dinosaur. He may by dint of circumstances remain in power, but his followers would almost certainly be better off without him."

I think it's a great idea - what does Dan Losquadro have to do with Shelter Island or Southold? And, more importantly - what do Shelter Islanders and the people of Southold have to say about that vs. you espousers -- what are your real beefs, personally, 'splain Lucys!!

This is clearly a redistricting plan that favors the GOP. The East end district looses the Mastics (DEM) but keeps the Moriches (GOP) and picks up Southold (GOP). If this goes through, maybe Skip Heaney will return to politics to represent us.
This redistricting plan is gerrymandering at its purist by the NYS GOP.

Why, SHNative, do you care if the East End loses the Mastics? If this goes through, maybe Thiele will be voted out now that he's not on the Republican ticket . . . It would seem to me that people will vote for the person they believe will best represent their (common! I would think!) interests under this plan. Your comment, other than being "purely" political (anti-Republican) makes absolutely no sense to me. "Makes Sense" Frank is right.

I find this redistricting to be quite interesting. This will essentially allow Thiele to inherit the state senate seat from Ken LaValle. I notice that Thiele publicly voices his disapproval but privately was pushing for it. This sounds like a Peconic County redux to me.

As long as the Assembly allows "the boss" Sheldon Silver to continue his absolute control of everything, any hope for change is moot.

It makes sense to have the same Rep for the North and South Forks. Why would Fred oppose that?

Why no mention of where Mastics and Shirley will be. I guess that's not as important as the East End. However it's important to us who live here.
