Environmentalists Wary Of County Using Drinking Water Funds Improperly

Some of the region’s most prominent environmental advocates took the Suffolk County Legislature to task this week for what they perceive as an attempt by some legislators to redirect money intended to be used to protect drinking water supplies for other uses.

The heads of the Long Island Pine Barrens Society, the Group for the East End and the Citizens Campaign for the Environment all spoke before the legislature on Tuesday, highlighting the fact that Suffolk County voters have overwhelmingly approved extensions to the Drinking Water Protection Program, which is funded by a quarter-percent sales tax, six times since it was put in place in 1987—most recently in 2007, which extended the tax through 2030.
