Westhampton Sex Offender Bill Gets Tabled At County

Mar 28, 2012 12:46 PM

The Suffolk County Legislature on Tuesday tabled a bill calling for the abandonment of a trailer parked on county property in Westhampton that houses homeless registered sex offenders, despite the appeal of South Fork Legislator Jay Schneiderman.

“I made my plea, but it got tabled,” Ms. Schneiderman said. “Our next meeting will be in Riverside, and I can really keep the pressure on to close that trailer, or close both trailers and get the new program going.”

The county has begun planning for the establishment of six shelters scattered throughout the county, each housing up to six registered sex offenders who cannot find legal housing elsewhere. Currently, all 28 of the county’s homeless sex offenders are housed at the trailers in Westhampton and Riverside. Both are in Southampton Town.

Mr. Schneiderman said the bill was undermined this week somewhat by a letter from Suffolk County Department of Social Services Commissioner Greg Blass to other legislators saying that if the Westhampton trailer were closed, the county would be housing the eight registered sex offenders who currently sleep there at hotels in western Suffolk.

He said he plans to encourage residents to attend the legislature’s next meeting to put pressure on the other legislators to support closing the Westhampton trailer immediately.
