South Fork Community Members Stand In Solidarity With Victims And Families Of Orlando Nightclub Shooting

A vigil for the victims of the Orlando mass shooting was held in Bridgehampton on Tuesday night. DANA SHAW
Jun 15, 2016 11:44 AM

Robert Kohnken was 19 when he started working at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

After growing up in a small town like Sag Harbor, he said, living in Orlando was “beyond fascinating.” First visiting and then working at Pulse from 2008 to 2010 as his drag alter ego, Razor Adonis/Naomi Sommers, only heightened that experience. He called it one of the greatest times of his life.

“From the second I walked in, I felt like I had found a place where I belong, a home away from home. I was hypnotized by the light, the music, the energy and, of course, the show,” he said. “Pulse is so much more than a club—it’s a family, a home, a safe space, a celebration, a community and a spirit.”

So when Mr. Kohnken, now 28 and again living in Sag Harbor, woke up to a text message Sunday morning saying, “Can’t believe seeing that on the news this morning. … Awful,” his heart dropped. He would soon learn that his former place of employment was the target of the most deadly mass shooting in American history.

“My head started spinning and I felt like throwing up. I was probably thinking 1,000 things a second. My main thought was, ‘Oh, God, what if my friends are dead?’ I started sending off messages to everyone I could,” he recalled.

Fortunately, he discovered that all of his closest friends and co-workers either weren’t working that night or had been able to escape alive and uninjured.

The relief did not last. When the list of victims was released, he discovered that a number of acquaintances and patrons he knew were killed.

“Still, to this day, I simply can’t fathom an act of such malicious hatred and violence happening there,” Mr. Kohnken said. “Pulse is a sanctuary, not a hostile place where fighting occurs. I know my co-workers and myself are just taking things moment by moment at this point.”

But when he found out about a vigil planned for Bridgehampton, where he now works as a barista at Starbucks, he was compelled to join with the South Fork community to mourn and remember.

That night, about 80 students, educators, religious leaders, community members, business owners and canines joined together in solidarity to show support for the victims and the families of the shooting at Pulse.

Organized by Bridgehampton School English teacher Tom House in coordination with local clergy and the Hampton Library, the demonstration provided a way for South Fork locals to remember and honor the lives lost by taking a peaceful walk into Bridgehampton, stopping at the Hampton Library and making a loop of the hamlet before returning to the school.

Mr. House said he wanted this event to be for his students in particular. “I want them to have the opportunity to participate in a vigil, to have an example of their home community coming together to express grief over a national, even global, tragedy in a peaceful, caring way,” he said before the vigil. “There’s so much goodness in so many people in our local community, and I want to help display that and nurture that. And I know, by all the interest that’s been generated just today, that many others do, too.”

Bridgehampton School students Jaden Campbell and Stephanie Bonilla said they were deeply disturbed by the events in Orlando and sought to be part of something to stand up against it.

“A lot of people died there, and I don’t think it was right for someone to do that to them,” Jaden said while holding a sign that read “Bees Stand With Orlando.”

Before the large group set off on their trek down Main Street, Mr. House, joined by other leaders of the community, assembled in front of the school to speak. “This is a way for our hometown to show some solidarity with Orlando,” Mr. House told the crowd. “Let’s show them how much Bridgehampton cares.”

Rabbi Daniel Geffen of Temple Adas Israel in Sag Harbor said that he was pleased to see such a large crowd gather despite the short notice. “It’s very important for our community to be supportive, especially in tragedies like this, to show that there are far more loving, God-fearing, whatever you want to call it, peaceful people in the world than there are people who want to tear it down,” he said. “This is really a demonstration of the grassroots nature out here.”

For someone personally affected by the tragedy like Mr. Kohnken, it was also a healing experience.

“To watch a community get together to support and raise up a group that has been affected by such a horrific tragedy is beautiful,” he said. “At the end of the day we are all one, all trudging this journey we call life. Why not show love and support to each other instead of hate and intolerance?”

The vigil was the second to take place in Bridgehampton this week. Mr. House also organized a more impromptu gathering on Sunday evening after looking for something he could do in light of the tragedy.

“I didn’t want to just sit at home by myself, writing and reacting on Facebook,” he said. “And I didn’t see any public gathering forming locally to honor the victims. So I got in touch with a few of the truly caring people in the community I know.”

Maryann Calendrille and Kathryn Szoka, owners of Canio’s Books in Sag Harbor, said they received word of the vigil from Mr. House at the tail end of a book discussion at the shop on “The New Jim Crow.” Deciding to drive to Bridgehampton to join the vigil, the couple encouraged attendees of the discussion to join them—and many did.

“It was a spontaneous way to be together and shine a little light there,” Ms. Calendrille said.

As at Tuesday night’s event, the group gathered on Bridgehampton Main Street with signs and flags to display their support.

Ms. Szoka said that the sorrow for the loss of lives was palpable during the gathering, but just being together was a way of healing. “We wanted to bring love and spirit and healing to that and show solidarity from the East End community,” she said.

With many visitors returning west Sunday night, Ms. Szoka said, a number of drivers honked and gave thumbs-ups and peace signs in support

There is also a demonstration against assault weapons planned for Sunday, June 19, at 4 p.m. in front of the Community House on Main Street in Water Mill by the East Hampton and Southampton Democratic Committees, the LGBT Network and the Long Island chapter of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence.

Local community activist Michael O’Neill said the groups will gather on the green with signs expressing their mission to ban assault weapons.

“We’ve seen the toll that all these machine guns have taken,” Mr. O’Neill said, referring to the recent tragedy as well as the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012.

“I hope they will occur all across the country until the politicians understand that they are standing up against a sizable majority of the American population,” he said of the demonstration. “People have to speak up and out against it.”

Farther west, a large-scale vigil attracted more than 1,000 attendees Monday night at the LGBT Network’s Center in Bay Shore.

The Network’s CEO, David Kilmnick, released a statement Sunday afternoon announcing the vigil and noted that the organization would be providing grief counselors at its community centers in Woodbury, Bay Shore and Sag Harbor.

“The deplorable act of violence that targeted the LGBT community and stole 50 lives and left scores of others injured is a painful reminder of the hate and bias that continues to plague our country. Our hearts and minds are joined with all the family, friends and loved ones who are mourning today,” Mr. Kilmnick said.

Local officials, including U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin, also released statements following the shooting.

“This barbaric terror attack against innocent Americans is truly devastating, and our entire country mourns this senseless loss of life. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the greater Orlando community,” Mr. Zeldin said. “While the investigation is ongoing, and details are still emerging, we are too often reminded that while we frequently hear and read about terrorist attacks abroad, we have a very real, ongoing homeland security threat within our own borders. We, as a country, must remain ever vigilant.”

Meanwhile, Governor Andrew Cuomo directed the lights of One World Trade Center’s spire to be displayed in the colors of the pride flag to show the state’s solidarity with the LGBT community and to mourn the loss of life. “From Stonewall to marriage equality to protecting transgender individuals to the first-in-the nation executive action to ban conversion therapy, New York, has led the way in the fight for LGBT rights,” he said. “In this state, we believe that no matter your race, creed, color, gender identity or expression, you have the right to live your life free from persecution and prejudice.”

Thank you Congressman Zeldin for being the only one in this article (the author included) to be quoted calling this attack what it is. A terrorist attack targeting the LGBT community.

I read it, and re-read it, where does the Congressman address this as an attack on the LGBT community?

Because it is not an "arab" attack. It now appears to be a gay dude who can't reconcile that within himself. He pledged allegiance to two separate , divergent terrorists groups that despise each other.
A poor attempt to cover up his motives.

People who politicize everything have issues they need to deal with. That is plain and simple. Also plain is the fact that the shooter had mental issues, just as all mass murderers. If a mental person claims he is from Mars and starts shooting people we call them crazy. If a mental person claims he is from ISIS and starts shooting we call them a terrorist. The shooter was not from Mars, or ISIS for that matter, just mentally unstable. The major problem is mental health... there are people who are ...more

People who rant about politics and blame everything on a particular politician or party sound a lot like mass shooters themselves. It is often revealed after these events that the killers often ranted about issues that they had no control over. They frequent news comment boards or social meadia making disparaging comments about a person or issue. This is a sign of a troubled person. Politics, religion, or social issues get some people so upset, they have a tendency to lash out in some form or fashion. ...more

Well then, we should provide you with some other facts.

Interviews with co-workers and former co-workers show Mateen to be mentally unstable, and he even spoke of killing people. His employer was apparently unable to see obvious red flags, even when provided with reports from those who worked directly with him. Those reports not only showed him to be unstable, but a homphobe as well. Mateen even was said to have wished he could kill all black people, but he was a fan of racial slurs ...more

Along your line of reasoning, not only were Reagan's actions while in office "high treason", he caused 9/11 by financing the mujahideen fighters which later became Al Qaeda. Main screw up really was the choice to only fund the war, and not to fund schools, roads, and infrastructure beyond the conflict.

Much of it assumed an audience that already has spent years poring over anti-Clinton urban legends and that gets almost all its news from the Drudge Report.

It is also a fact-checking nightmare, a garbage truck of lies, ...more

Trump achieves complete idiot status by congratulating Scotland for taking its country back.

Meanwhile Scotland voted against Brexit and it is expected another Independence referendum will come about in the next two years.

Fear of being overrun by immigrants was a driving concern for “Leave” voters, who appeared to dominate the conversation on social media. Globalization concerns and a desire to take back Britain were also factors.

One of the heroic survivors of the Benghazi attack, who held off invading Islamists until rescuers reached the besieged CIA base, has begun a national campaign to counter President Obama’s narrative on the terrorist threat.
Army Ranger Kris Paronto has started a nonprofit called Leading From the Front, a national movement to drive home the real threat Islamic extremists pose to America.
“Radical Islam is at war with America, and we are slowly losing,” Mr. Paronto said. ...more

Kris Paronto's complaint is that the state department prefers to form alliances with local forces rather than rely on the US military to impose its will. That opinion is debatable. However, NOT debatable is Mr. Paronto's support of a full-scale military re-invasion of Iraq by the United States.

Einstein's alleged definition of insanity comes to mind.

Bungled CIA Black Op

We told you so:

"Among the revelations in the Committee's 800-page report is that the CIA missed real-time intelligence about the situation on the ground that led the agency to bungle its response to the incident. The government then misled the public about what had happened in the immediate aftermath of the attacks."

It is plain to see everyone in Europe, is very happy about the Brexit and wishes Britain the very best for her future. In addition, all patriots in Europe want to follow Britain's example and have a referendum in their countries as well. Britain has brought hope to millions, and hopefully abandoned ship in time to avoid going down with it.

Mr Z called us conspiracy theorists. look now, What sheep they all were. It was almost a fatal error for Europe.

P.S. Over 3M signatures. Newser: "Be careful what you wish for—or at least anticipate you might get it before you create a petition. In May, before the Brexit vote took place, "Leave" advocate William Oliver Healey created a petition through government channels, calling for a second EU referendum if certain conditions weren't met on the first vote: specifically, if "the remain or leave vote is less than 60% based [on] a turnout less than 75%." (It appears Healey first put the petition up in November and re-upped it in May after it expired.) And that's exactly what happened in Thursday's vote, with the BBC noting the winning "Leave" category only received 52%, with turnout at 72.2%."

The foreign ministers of France and Germany are due to reveal a blueprint to effectively do away with individual member states in what is being described as an “ultimatum”.

Under the radical proposals EU countries will lose the right to have their own army, criminal law, taxation system or central bank, with all those powers being transferred to Brussels.

I don't have a dog in this fight but the Brexit vote was clearly a protest against allowing Middle Eastern Muslim immigrants into the UK. I doubt that many who cast a "Yes" (i.e. "Leave") vote actually expected to win. Now that the unthinkable has happened, and voters are beginning to see the con$equence$ of their protest, remorse has set in.

There will be a re-vote and "No" will win handily. Historically, this episode will be judged similarly (in consequence) to Coke's silly attempt ...more
