Though Critical Of Spat With Fallen Vet's Family, Zeldin Says He Still Stands By Trump

U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Aug 9, 2016 1:39 PM

As some members of the Republican Party have been critical of the party’s 2016 presidential nominee, Donald J. Trump, in the wake of a clash with the Muslim family of an American soldier killed in Iraq, U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin said last week that he thinks Mr. Trump mishandled the situation.

He also said he disagrees with Mr. Trump’s policy on Muslim immigration—a policy stand that sparked the clash.

However, Mr. Zeldin, who is seeking reelection to a second term in the U.S. House of Representatives from the 1st District, said he still stands behind the candidate.

“I endorsed Mr. Trump when there were two candidates in the race, and this is still a two-person race,” Mr. Zeldin said of the presidential contest between Mr. Trump and Hillary Clinton. “I’ve had disagreements on policy and with statements of both candidates. But between those two candidates, it’s an easy decision.”

Mr. Zeldin said he does not agree with a policy that Mr. Trump proffered early in the presidential primary season, calling for a ban on immigration by Muslims in light of Islamist terrorists attacks in the United States and around the world. But he said that his split on the issue, and others, is not enough to sour his overall support of Mr. Trump.

At the recent Democratic National Convention, Khizr Khan, a Pakistani immigrant whose son, Humayun, was a U.S. Army soldier who died in a suicide attack on his base in Iraq in 2004, delivered an impassioned speech directed at Mr. Trump, questioning his understanding of the U.S. Constitution and American immigration history, singling out the candidate’s position, which he has since softened somewhat.

The following day, Mr. Trump fired back, saying he was “viciously attacked” by Mr. Khan, but then focused on Mr. Khan’s wife, Ghazala, who stood by his side while he gave the speech, implying that she didn’t also speak because she wasn’t “allowed to.”

Mr. Zeldin, a U.S. Army veteran and an active member of the U.S. Army Reserves, said he deeply respects the Khan’s for the sacrifice that their family made on behalf of the country and thinks Mr. Trump allowed the criticism by Mr. Khan to devolve into the media-stoked spat that dominated coverage of the candidate following the convention. He said Mr. Trump was entitled to respond to a criticism directed at him, but that he should have kept the focus on the policy stance rather than personal jabs at the parents of an American military veteran killed in action.

“The person who is the target of a claim has the right to defend a policy proposal,” Mr. Zeldin said. “But asking why Mrs. Khan didn’t speak is irrelevant to the debate on a policy that was the meat of the attack. It was a policy position—and that’s where it should have stayed.”

The policy that Mr. Trump initially proposed, in a general way, is not one Mr. Zeldin said he could support, but he added that considering certain religious beliefs in reviewing immigration applications should not be completely off the table, in light of the worldwide terror campaign being waged by Islamist groups in the Middle East.

“I don’t believe religion can be used as the sole basis of whether someone should be allowed or denied entry into our country,” the congressman said. “But I also think we would be foolish not to consider it in trying to add up every bit of intelligence when trying to decide whether an application for entry should be approved or denied.”

Mr. Zeldin also made national news this past week for his strident criticism of President Barack Obama’s administration and a $400 million cash payment that was made to Iran, which Mr. Zeldin has said was ransom for four American citizens who were released from an Iranian prison about the same time as the money was apparently delivered.

The Obama administration has said the money was part of a more than $1 billion settlement of a decades old lawsuit in the wake of the nuclear agreement reached last year that has thawed relations between the two countries somewhat. The release of the prisoners was also an after-effect of the deal but was negotiated by the U.S. separately from the legal settlement and that neither were directly part of the nuclear talks.

“It’s beyond unbelievable that a $400 million cash payment made at the exact same moment as four American hostages were released was coincidence,” Mr. Zeldin said.

Mr. Zeldin sparked some criticism with a phrase he used in an early interview on the subject in which he suggested President Obama was “playing for some other team,” which some construed as him calling the president a traitor.

Mr. Zeldin said he was making no such allegation and was simply implying the president was putting a much more common interest first: politics.

The president, he said, was paying Iran ransom for the release of prisoners as a political play, while giving away a bargaining chip that could have been used in negotiations with Iran over issues of pressing national safety significance.

“You will never be able to take the politics out of politics,” Mr. Zeldin said. “But with regard to foreign policy it’s important that you are pursuing policies that are always in the best interests of our country. At times it seems the president is pursuing domestic politics over foreign policy.”

Make no mistake, Donald J, Trump is an ego-maniacal jerk.

Hillary, on the other hand is a pathological liar and an as yet unindicted criminal!

Everyone wants Trump to release his tax returns -- I'd like the transcripts of the $250m speeches she delivered to the various brokerage firms on Wall Street.

Trump has no idea of what he's doing. Hillary knows EXACTLY what she's doing, and that's even scarier.

I am perplexed as to why my considered comment was removed and have written to Joseph Louchheim and Mike Wright to inquire.

It does upset me that the impression left to the casual reader is that my comment and by extension I, was duplicate (lazy), off-topic (stupid) or submitted inappropriate content (rude).

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Lee Zeldin is in the same dilemma that most Republicans in public life face right now -- stick with the party's presidential nominee or make a clean break with him. The voters won't be satisfied with feeble half measures like saying "I don't agree with this policy." Trump has committed too many outrages for that. After all, how many "disagreements" can you have before you finally just say you're not supporting the guy?

"Wouldn't be good at the other" is pretty cut and dry, Turkey.

You have, quite literally, said (allow me to paraphrase) "She's not going to be a good Congressman."

This statement shouldn't change depending on who wins the primary. Face it, you thought Calone could trump her and put all of your eggs in one basket.

Lee is a much better choice for Congress. Especially since, by your admission, ATH isn't cut out for the job.

SHOCK PHOTO: Multiple staffers help unstable Hillary up stairs
AUGUST 7, 2016
BY KYLE OLSON
The questionable health condition of Hillary Clinton should be a major issue of the 2016 campaign.

The latest evidence comes in the form of Clinton being helped up a set of stairs by multiple individuals outside what appears to be a home.

The photos, published by Reuters and Getty, show the 68-year-old candidate with aides holding her arms as she ascends the stairs.
Aug 7, 16 10:42 PM appended by 27dan
Reuters and Getty photographs captured Hillary Clinton, 68, struggling to make it up the stairs, either as a result of her fragile body or perhaps because her well-documented brain injuries make it harder for her to transport herself through daily life activities. The photos gained wide circulation on the Internet Sunday.

Social media numbers don't jibe with the polls.
On Facebook, Trump has 10,174,358 likes. Clinton has 5,385,959 likes.
On Twitter, Trump has 10.6 million followers. Clinton has 8 million.
YouTube Live Stream shows Trump averaging 30,000 live viewers per stream. Clinton averages a mere 500!
Instagram? 2.2 million followers for Trump, 1.8 million for Hillary.
And Reddit has Trump with 197,696 subscribers, Clinton with 24,429 subscribers, and 'Hillary for Prison' has 55,228 subscribers!
