The monthly Artists & Writers Night series at Almond Restaurant in Bridgehampton will begins its new season Tuesday, October 4, with author Iris Smyles.
Ms. Smyles recently released her unconventional novel “Dating Tips for the Unemployed,” the follow-up to her debut book, “Iris Has Free Time.” Her short stories and essays have appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, Paris Review Daily, The Observer, and Best American Travel Writing 2015, among other publications, anthologies, and artist catalogs.
Executive chef Jason Weiner will prepare a family-style three-course meal. The event begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $45, including dinner and a glass of local wine or craft beer. Reservations are required. Call 631-537-5665.
The Kiwanis Club of Greater Westhampton will host the fifth annual Westhampton Beach Oyster Festival on Saturday, October 8, on the water at the village marina.
Among the food vendors will be Sydney’s Taylor Made Cuisine, Shuckers Lobster & Clam Bar, Cowfish, Sherin’s Seafood, Justin’s Chop Shop and The New Moon Café. Craft brews will be for sale as well. There will be hot dogs, cotton candy and ice cream for kids.
The oyster shucking competition will begin at noon; contestants should arrive by 11:30 a.m. with their own shucking knives. Guests can vote on the winner of the clam chowder contest at 2 p.m.
The rock band Yankee Rebel and DJ Bill will provide music. Sir Cadian Rhythm, the 2015 WEHM Real Band winner, will also perform.
Additional entertainment acts includes Jester Jim and the Kings of the Coast Interactive Pirate Show. Pirates will lead sword-fighting lessons at 2 p.m. Professional face painting will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Kids can also enjoy pumpkin painting, bounce houses, obstacle courses, slides and a big pile of hay.
Admission is free, but the suggested donation is $5 per person or $20 per family.
The village marina is located at 1 Library Avenue Extension, Westhampton Beach. The festival runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit whboysterfest.com.
