Helen Talmage Hamilton Walsh Dies September 14

Helen Talmage Hamilton Walsh of Hampton Bays died September 14 at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton. She was 93.

Ms. Walsh, born May 12, 1923, at home on Long Lane, was a 10th generation descendant of Thomas Talmage, one of the founders of East Hampton. Her parents were Ferris G. Talmage and Clara M. (Bell) Talmage. She graduated from East Hampton High School in 1940 and from Syracuse University in 1944. At Syracuse she was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.

She married Raymond Hamilton from Amagansett in 1945, when he returned from fighting in World War II in Europe. They had two children, Prudence T.H. Carabine and David R. Hamilton.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of East Hampton, where she taught Sunday school and served as president of the Women’s Association and as an elder. After she moved to Hampton Bays, she became a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton.

Ms. Walsh taught high school English at Bridgehampton School for 10 years, was a member of the Sweet Adelines and was a life member of the East Hampton Daughters of the American Revolution.

After the death of her husband in 1969, she met Robert Walsh from Hampton Bays and they married in 1974.

She was a member of the Old Towne Garden Club, serving as its president, and she was a charter member of the Center for Creative Retirement at Southampton College.

Ms. Walsh is survived by a daughter, Prudence Carabine and husband Brian; stepdaughters, Maureen, Eileen and Roberta; a granddaughter, Brigid A. Carabine-Aab and husband Alexander Aab; and three great-grandchildren, David, Emma and Grace. She is also survived by a grandson, Major Conlon D. Carabine, USMC, currently deployed in Bahrain; a sister-in-law, Jane Peters Talmage; and four step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; a son, David Raymond Hamilton; a grandson, Sean Ferrish Carabine; and two brothers, David and Stephen Talmage.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of East Hampton on Saturday, October 22, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at the Session House. Interment will be at Green River Cemetery.
