Sports Roundup: Bonacker Swimmers Defeat Deer Park; Mariner Nakia Williams Wins High Jump At Meet

Jan 9, 2017 3:35 PM

The East Hampton boys swim team defeated Deer Park, 85-75, at home on Thursday, January 5, to improve to 2-1 in League II, 4-1 overall.

In the process, Bonackers Christian Brierley, Ethan McCormac and the 400-meter freestyle relay team qualified for the Section XI Championships, covering all of Suffolk County, which are held next month. Aidan Forst (500-meter free) and Ryan Duryea (100-meter breaststroke) had already qualified and will be joining Brierley and McCormac at counties. Brierley and McCormac have both qualified for the 50- and 100-meter free, with Brierley qualifying for the 100-meter backstroke, and McCormac qualifying for both the 200-meter individual medley and 100-meter butterfly.

T.J. Calabrese was named “Swimmer of the Meet” by the East Hampton captains. Returning from an illness, Calabrese was given a light schedule against Deer Park to ease him back into a routine. He swam the 50-meter butterfly and was part of both the 200-meter medley and 200-meter freestyle relays. But when one of his teammates became sick during the meet, Calabrese also swam the 100-meter butterfly and wound up placing second.

The Bonackers are scheduled to compete at West Islip on Wednesday.

Vanessa Hammond placed ninth in the 55-meter hurdles in a personal-best 10.03 seconds.
