Zeldin Says No Special Prosecutor Needed After FBI Director Fired

May 16, 2017 2:11 PM

In the wake of the firing of FBI Director James Comey by President Donald J. Trump this week, U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin said that he does not support the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate the possibility of links between the president’s campaign staff and the Russian government.

Mr. Zeldin said that he has spoken with several high-ranking officials about the investigation thus far, including Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, and has said that based on the information they’ve given him, he does not believe the appointment of an independent special prosecutor is warranted.

He also implied that he did not think the president was unwarranted in dismissing Mr. Comey.

“James Comey was in an incredibly challenging situation last year, with so many factors and enormous pressures coming down to bear on him and his agency from the highest levels and with the highest stakes,” Mr. Zeldin said. “Ultimately, President Trump’s decision does, in fact, present the [FBI] with a fresh start and the type of new beginning that has enormous potential to restore any broken trust wherever it may exist.

“As for calls for a special prosecutor,” Mr. Zeldin added, in a message shared by his communications staff, “based on my last briefing with several federal intel and law enforcement agency heads, including CIA, FBI, NSA, and Director of National Intelligence, I am not calling for a special prosecutor.”

Investigations of Mr. Trump’s campaign connections with Russian businesses and government officials is being led in separate efforts with somewhat different focuses by the FBI and by multiple congressional committees, most notably the House Intelligence Committee—whose chairman, Republican Congressman Devin Nunes, recused himself after being accused of having discussed the committee’s findings with Mr. Trump’s staff.

Some Democratic members of Congress and other critics have said that President Trump’s firing of the FBI director appears to have been motivated expressly by the desire to influence the investigation into his campaign and have said there should be an independent investigator appointed to handle the inquiries to ensure that there is not undue political influence.

Some, including some Democrats, have said that an independent prosecutor might hinder the FBI and would not necessarily stay above the fray of politics anyway—nodding to the politically steered crusade of the most famous holder of such a post: Kenneth Starr.

Public polls nationwide have shown steadily growing support for the idea of an independent investigator taking over the inquiry.

An investigation in search of a crime...
May 16, 17 12:02 PM appended by Mr. Snerdley
It's nothing more than a political witch hunt resulting from an revolving story line of why Hillary lost the election. It couldn't have been because she was a crappy candidate, surely, it had to be some other nefarious reason. There is NO evidence of ANY Trump wrong doing.
By Mr. Snerdley (304), Southampton on May 16, 17 12:02 PM
you claim that there is no evidence of any wrong doing is a guess. I guess we'll have to check back after the facts are revealed.

Po Boy - "Let's start at the beginning".
1. Trump campaign staff were in communication with the Russians during the campaign. At least 1 had to be fired during the campaign after it became public knowledge.
2. ALL credible sources with actual knowledge of events state the Russians did engage in medaling in our election. The fact that HRC was a suck a** candidate is irrelevant.

And to all of you on the left who are salivating over the coming impeachment of Trump and his removal from office: Be careful what you wish for. Next up is President Pence, a person who believes that corporations and the wealthy should be able to rape, pillage and plunder without consequence. About the only government regulation he does believe in is to shove his religious views down everyone else's throats. It will be like having the American version of the Taliban in the White House.

Yes zilch. Easily explainable in the light of continuous fake news.
May 17, 17 11:44 AM appended by Po Boy
1. Communication with foreign official is commonplace for campaigns according to Officials. Whether Flynn "had" to be fired is a matter of opinion. 2. Define Medaling? Russia had no involvement in votes cast. 3. See item 1. Flynn was ultimately fired not for his communication with Russian officials, but for misleading US officials. 4. Details are developing, but hearsay at the current time. 5. Trump said. “And, in fact, when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, ‘You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story. It’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won."

I believe that there are two investigations,

1. To determine the methods and extent that a foreign power acted to disrupt or influence the 2016 presidential election

2. To determine if president trump or any of his team members (or anyone really) were in conversation with agents of a foreign power and discussed american foreign policy and/or any efforts to disrupt the 2016 presidential election.

Who lied about what? Mark Levin had a field day shredding this piece of garbage earlier. Most notably, how did Reuters have access to classified information to make the report? Answer, it was leaked to them... a crime. But no, the "real story" is "They lied about it" but yet there is no substantiation to any report - just unnamed sources. LOL, Bhengazigate... sure let's call it a day and all go home, nothing to see here... well, except for three dead Americans including an ambassador.

Bull crap. With no shortage of embassy security funding, you put the money where it is most needed. Any deficiencies in embassy security fall squarely in the lap of the Hillary Clinton State Department. Politics aside if that is possible, budget cuts were NOT the reason why three Americans died in Benghazi. They died because of on-the-ground decisions related to what we now know to be inadequate security - and decisions made by State Department leadership to NOT consider improvements to inadequate security to which there was no nexus to funding. Those decisions boiled down to deciding inadequate security was not a priority.

This is where the liberal news media is at it's toxic worst. In that they WON'T report what is happening in the world.

Namely, that the WORLD is happy that the Barrack Obama experiment of appeasment/leadership from behind, has come to an end.

Literally, the world is relieved America is back to being America. And that Barrack Obama's "transformation of America" has been reversed.

But fret not. The liberals do not hold the country hostage any longer with the monopoly on ...more

Arnold, Google my friend, it's not classified information and to most who are paying attention, it's common knowledge - the count is somewhere around 10 - at least - and that's considering a corrupt media that is incapable of doing its job when a Democrat is in office.

Shadow banking, and the lack of the regulation thereof was the crux of the "Great Recession". Without the CDOs, tranches, and bundling of toxic mortgages, there would have been a real estate bubble that popped, worth a lot less. When securing a mortgage , the service of a competent attorney is crucial. No one was FORCED to take out an adjustable rate mortgage or a no income check mortgage, those were quite obviously poor choices. That being said, the mortgagee is contractually bound to uphold their end of the deal. It's their RESPONSIBILTY.
By bigfresh (2779), north sea on Jun 2, 17 6:21 AM
That is true.

However, the proper regulatory safeguards which should have been in place were not. If the brokers were properly policed and regulations which should have been extant were in place, the financial catastrophe would have been a hiccup by comparison. The architects of the system are far more responsible.

I am willing to bet thanks to Greenspan's pronouncements that more than a sufficient number of lawyers were on board to ratify their client's mortgages. His pronouncement that everyone should have I am ARM and a it was a good product for the masses ensured that. The empty promises of refinance made it sweeter in infinitesimally more cases than you'd ever admit. Don't be obtuse about the allure of easy money.
By Mr. Z (9040), North Sea on Jun 2, 17 6:55 PM
A fool and his money are soon parted, we re financed twice during this time, knocked our rate on a 30 year conventional down to 5%, next year turned the 30 year into a 15 year for the same monthly payment, never pulled any equity out of the property. Used an attorney both times but knew enough not to play the carnival game of an ARM. Not that hard.
By bigfresh (2779), north sea on Jun 3, 17 7:39 AM
After the decades of absurdly low interest rates, it really didn't look like a severe risk. One thing that would have lessened the crisis was if banks refinanced mortgagees for a fixed rate. In far too many cases they refused. There were so many people who could afford the payment they were making, but when the rates jacked up their payments in many cases doubled, if not tripled. Hindsight is always 20/20, but in this case there were so many who warned of the inevitable and were ignored.

That is the religion of dictators and totalitarians, all those opposed to democracy. Shall we put you down as opposed to your system of government? As anti-American?

At the same time, the Comey testimony refutes reports by CNN and other outlets that Comey would dispute that claim. Every single week CNN comes up with 100% contrived "breaking news" designed to denigrate Trump and then proceed to shriek "impeachment" until a couple of days later ...more

As each day goes by you show your immaturity level more and more... you and June and Met and your temper tantrums. What little babies the dems are...to yell back slurs like liar at the guy who just smoked you? He won. You were unable to beat him. You spent $1.2B. You used every dirty trick in the book. You still lost.

When Dems insult Trump they demean themselves. He is BETTER THAN YOU. Deal with it.

Keep it up It just makes Republican victory in 2018 and 2020 easier

I keep on remembering that last debate when President Trump was being pestered be the media and being asked if he would accept the results of the election if he lost. The media spent many days talking about what a threat it was and how damaging to the norms if he did not accept defeat... Yet here we are in June with a certain class of people who seem largely to be unable or unwilling to accept the results of an election and that President Trump is the President of the United States of America!

Apparently you can't grasp you pulled the lever for a candidate no less, if not more so, corrupt and flawed than the one you so vehemently opposed. The hardest part of being conned is admitting it.

My Lawyers Got Trump to Admit 30 Lies Under Oath

Trump sued me, then had to acknowledge 30 times during a deposition that he had lied over the years about a wide range of issues.

Because we're not idiots, and know the peril in which we've been placed with this sick, rank know-nothing at the helm of our country. And FYI, the alarm encompasses the full spectrum of ideology, not just the left.
And today we have a Tweet from one of trump's goober supporters (Mike Huckabee) that says it all: "Dems act like they never heard of atty/client privilege; AG is top atty in Exec branch serves @POTUS and not stooge of Congress." The idiot reveals he doesn't know the ...more

President, but not for long. Even his personal lawyer just lawyered up. (And, curiously, Pence just hired the godfather of Comey's daughter to represent him.) At least the legal profession is enjoying some job growth.....

Tick tick tick...even Trump knows it's over. He will resign as a self-described martyr when in reality his wounds have been self-inflicted. He had every chance to demonstrate he could be president of America but chose to only lead his quickly diminishing 35%. Geez, he just nominated his daughter's wedding planner to an important housing position in his administration. He's just not up to the job. Even Jimmy Carter laughs at him.
