Southampton Town To Launch Aircraft Noise Complaint System On Website

May 16, 2017 2:14 PM

A launch date has been set for a new link on Southampton Town’s website to give residents further opportunities to submit aircraft noise complaints.

The link, which is scheduled to launch on the town’s website on Friday, May 19, connects residents to Air Noise Report, a nonprofit system provided at no charge by Whitestone resident Dan Aronoff.

Southampton Town Councilwoman Christine Scalera said she believes the system will give Southampton residents peace of mind that their concerns about aircrafts from neighboring East Hampton Airport are being heard.

She noted that since the East Hampton Airport is a revenue source for East Hampton Town, some of her constituents have brought up concerns of a potential conflict of interest when noise complaints are registered with East Hampton officials.

The councilwoman said with the new connection through Southampton’s website, as residents log their complaints, the data will not only be received by East Hampton town officials, as it currently is, but now the Southampton Town Airport Noise Advisory Committee will regularly be able to check the data, giving residents assurances that it is being processed.

“It’s a concern I’ve heard the public has,” she said. “I’m trying to address it in a way to try and support and restore a sense of faith for the residents.”

Many of the flight paths from the East Hampton Airport are over easterly portions of the Town of Southampton, such as Bridgehampton, Water Mill, Sag Harbor, Noyac, and North Sea. With the new partnership, Air Noise Report will keep the complaint information and send Southampton monthly reports on complaints logged, the type of aircraft and where the complaints stem from, according to a press release from the town.

Presently, residents of both Southampton and East Hampton towns can log complaints about the aircraft noise only on the East Hampton Town website, or directly through Air Noise Report or PlaneNoise Inc., a widely used commercial system.

East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell said in a previous interview that his town already relies on both the Air Noise Report and PlaneNoise Inc. systems, and will continue to do so.
