Hampton Bays Man In Critical Condition After East Hampton Crash

Jul 18, 2017 2:15 PM

A 25-year-old Hampton Bays man was fighting for his life after the pickup truck he was driving crashed into the woods en route from the East Hampton campground where he and friends had been staying when he left to get coffee and bagels.

East Hampton Town Police said that friends of Steven Lane said he had left the Cedar Point County Park campground a little before 7 a.m. on Sunday to head for a deli.

Just a few minutes later, his pickup truck was spotted by passing bicyclists in the woods off Northwest Road, a short distance away from the campground. They called police.

Emergency responders from East Hampton found Mr. Lane unconscious and showing signs of having suffered severe head trauma.

Town Police Captain Chris Anderson said that Mr. Lane had apparently failed to negotiate a sharp turn in the notoriously winding roadway and that his 1989 Chevrolet pickup truck plunged into the dense woods, striking a tree. Capt. Anderson said he did not know if Mr. Lane had been wearing a seat belt and that the pickup he was driving was not equipped with airbags.

Mr. Lane’s condition was determined by paramedics who responded to the crash scene to be too unstable to have him flown by Suffolk County Police medevac helicopter to the trauma center at Stony Brook University Medical Center, so he was taken to Southampton Hospital first, Capt. Anderson said.

After being stabilized there, he was airlifted to Stony Brook. As of Sunday afternoon he was listed in critical condition and East Hampton Town Police said they had received no further information about his condition.

“No news is good news from our standpoint,” Capt. Anderson said on Monday—a nod to the fact that the police would have been informed if Mr. Lane’s condition had worsened.
