Air National Guard Members Assisting With Rescue Operations In Texas

Aug 29, 2017 4:19 PM

The 104 members of the Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing deployed to Texas on Saturday by Governor Andrew Cuomo have already proven their worth, helping save 255 residents of Houston and nearby Katy since their weekend deployment as the remnants of Hurricane Harvey continue to pummel the Gulf Coast.

The governor sent reinforcements on Tuesday morning, deploying 16 additional ANG personnel and equipment to assist in ongoing rescue missions in the storm-battered communities, including those that are expected to receive a record-setting 50 inches of rain before the slow-moving storm finally moves on.

In spite of the enormous effort already put forth by those on the ground in Houston, the country’s fourth-largest city, and beyond, ANG Public Affairs Officer Captain Michael O’Hagan—one of the 16 additional personnel who traveled from Westhampton to Texas on Tuesday—said that emergency calls are continuing to climb as the rain continues to fall on already flooded streets that, in some instances, now resemble rivers.

In addition to manpower, the ANG, based at Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton, sent three Sikorsky HH-60 Pave Hawk rescue helicopters, a Lockheed HC-130 rescue plane and multiple boats and other watercraft with the original group on Saturday. Those who joined them on Saturday traveled south in another Lockheed HC-130 rescue plane, adding to the fleet.

Though Mr. Cuomo officially sent the all-volunteer force to Fort Hood, Texas, members are also stationed at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, New York ANG Master Sergeant Cheran Cambridge explained on Monday. This temporary base is much closer than Fort Hood to the epicenter of the storm, and allows the forces to more easily access the hardest-hit neighborhoods, she said.

The storm, which has already dropped a catastrophic 30 inches of rain since making landfall as a Category 4 hurricane late Friday night, is expected to dump a record-setting 50 inches of water in some regions of Texas before eventually making its way east later this week, according to the National Weather Service.

According to New York National Guard spokesperson Eric Durr, the deployed members of the 106th Rescue Wing are working under the Texas National Guard, and will stay on the ground as long as their Texas counterparts need them. This arrangement is part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, an agreement among the states and between the United States and its territories to share resources during natural and man-made disasters.

Mr. Durr added that though the 106th Rescue Wing is primarily trained to save pilots shot down behind enemy lines, they possess skill-sets that easily transfer to conducting evacuation missions in the flooded neighborhoods.

As thousands of Texans are displaced and the waters of the Brazos River, located southeast of Houston, steadily rise, calls for additional assistance are expected to continue climbing over the coming week, requiring all the ancillary resources local forces can get.

“New Yorkers firsthand know the damage Mother Nature can cause, and we stand shoulder to shoulder with Louisiana and Texas as they brace for Hurricane Harvey,” Governor Cuomo stated in a press release.

You mean the president who had a Republican congress that refused to work with him? Puhleeze, as if one branch of government can operate without the cooperation of another.
Now you have a complete idiot in the Oval Office who doesn't know enough not to alienate the power players in his own party. That plus the fact that the economy shows signs of slowing---186,000 fewer new jobs in trump's first 7 months than in Obama's last 7 months. Like those prospects, do ya'?

There is little recourse but division and polarization with such extremist views and a level of hypocrisy rarely seen. How does one in the LGBT community unify with people who consider them mentally ill, or biblically immoral? How does a person of color come together with a white supremacist?

On a lighter note, perhaps Trump should return Saudi Arabia's gifts? After all, that's the advice he gave his opponent...

A perfect reveal of the extent of the successful brainwashing by Hannity, Crowley et. al. with their toxic and unfounded bleating on a propaganda outlet that pretends to be news. Herewith just the latest example of "stormtroopers" on the side you portray as peaceful and angelic: New Jersey rally against hate inspired by the tragedy in Charlottesville last month was itself the victim of a hate attack, before it could even begin. Asbury Park Police say 22-year-old Morris May of Scotch Plains was arrested for pepper spraying a rally volunteer making signs Sunday night before the Labor Day rally. Mays was wearing a T-Shirt that read, "For those about to MAGA we salute you." It also had a picture of Pepe the Frog, which has been adopted by the so-called alt-right movement as a mascot. A person who identified himself as May's brother, but was not arrested, was wearing a Donald Trump T-shirt. Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Casey said the pair had gone to where volunteers were making signs and gotten into a "verbal argument" with them over politics. Volunteer Allison Kolarik, who is transgender, said she tried to walk away, but was continually blocked by May, then suddenly pepper sprayed. She said hate like that has to be "driven into the sea." When asked why she went ahead and attended the Labor Day Stand Against Hate rally despite the attack, she said "What are you going to do, let it take over? Let people like that win?" May was charged with two felony counts, aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon, police said. Source: http://www.nbcnewyork.com
