East Hampton Girls Swimming Settles For Second Place Overall At League III Championships

Oct 30, 2018 11:56 AM

The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton girls swimming team had its sights set on winning the League III Championships at Hauppauge High School on October 24, and while the Lady Bonackers outscored all of their opponents in the swimming events, the diving portion is what grabbed Sayville/Bayport/Blue Point the league title.

Officially, Sayville won the meet with 313 points, to East Hampton’s 295—but take away 36 diving points, and the Lady Bonackers won the swimming portion of the meet, 295-277.

“Our girls know they came out on top in the swimming portion of the League Championships,” East Hampton head coach Craig Brierley said. “This competition was a complete team effort. For those competing, every race mattered, and for the remainder of the team that was not competing, they were cheering for their teammates, showing good character and support for the team.”

Bonac set the tone right away in the first event, with Julia and Jane Brierley, Sophia Swanson and Oona Foulser blowing away the field in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing in 1:51.97, eight seconds ahead of second-place Harborfields.

East Hampton’s second state-qualifying swim came in the 100-yard butterfly, where Swanson was able to follow up her strong medley relay with a personal-best time of 59.73 seconds, finishing third in the league.

Foulser was the league champion in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in a personal-best 25.37 seconds. Jane Brierley was the league champion in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:09.49.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Foulser, Swanson, Julia and Jane Brierley won their fourth league title, dropping four seconds off their season’s-best time, finishing in 1:42.10. They are within four-tenths of a second of the state-qualifying time, which they could make up at the Section XI, or Suffolk County, Swimming Championships, to be held this Saturday at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood.

Darcy McFarland qualified for counties in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in a personal-best 1:07.76. Emma Wiltshire finished in a personal-best 1:00.08 and also qualified for counties.

Wiltshire and Foulser were named Swimmers of the Meet by their coaches and teammates for hitting personal and season’s bests and also qualifying for counties in their respective events.

The following relay teams and swimmers will be competing at counties this weekend: the 200 medley relay, 200 free relay, 400 free relay, Kiara Bailey-Williams (200 IM), Margaret Breen (50 free), Jane Brierley (200 IM, 50 free, 100 free, 100 breast), Julia Brierley (50 free, 100 back, 100 breast), Caroline Brown (100 back), Foulser (50 free, 100 free, 500 free), Camryn Hatch (100 free, 100 back), McFarland (100 fly, 100 back), Swanson (200 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 100 fly, 100 free, 500 free), and Wiltshire (100 free).
