UPDATE: Zeldin Votes Against Bill To Block Trump's National Emergency Declaration

U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin
Feb 27, 2019 10:19 AM

UPDATE: Wednesday, 9:30 a.m.

The House approved House Joint Resolution 46 in a 245-182 vote Tuesday afternoon to overturn Mr. Trump's emergency order. All Democrats and 13 Republicans were in favor of the legislation. Mr. Zeldin voted against it. The president threatened to veto if it passes the Senate.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The U.S. House of Representatives plans to vote Tuesday on legislation that would reverse President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration.

U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin said he will be voting against it. House Democrats introduced the bill Friday, which has 226 co-sponsors. It is expected to pass the House and face a more uncertain fate before the Republican-controlled Senate.

In an email Monday, Mr. Zeldin placed the blame on Congress for making Mr. Trump go to such lengths to secure funding for the border wall.

“The President’s emergency declaration was not Plan A. Plan A was for Congress to do its job and clearly and specifically allocate the resources we need to safeguard our country,” he said in the email. “Unfortunately, some members of Congress became suddenly opposed to increased funding to harden our physical border barrier just because they and their base hate the President. It’s disappointing many want to play political games instead of govern.”

Mr. Trump made the emergency order on February 15, bypassing the Senate’s refusal to access over $5 billion he requested. The declaration allows Mr. Trump to use existing defense appropriations to fund the construction of the wall.

Congress passed a bipartisan spending bill the day before the national emergency was declared that granted access to $1.375 billion to fund the border wall, much less than he sought. The 1,159-page legislation was approved the day after it was introduced in order to avoid another government shutdown. Mr. Zeldin voted against the measure.

In his initial response to the national emergency, Mr. Zeldin said that Congress should have passed a bill “that wasn’t jammed through in less than 24 hours, but allowed everyone to read and comprehend it.”

Mr. Zeldin said that he plans to look into the sources of the additional funds to determine the legality of its new uses.

“The Executive Branch does have some flexibility with regards to this particular emergency declaration, if the President stays within Congressional notification requirements and existing authorities related to certain pots of money,” he said in the email Monday. “With that being said, it is a near certainty this decision will ultimately be ruled on by the Supreme Court.”

Zero tolerance detention wasn't Obama's idea...it was Trump's.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (6687), HAMPTON BAYS on Feb 27, 19 3:21 PM
It was Obama's idea, and Democrats idea to put children in cages. Remember that Trump was holding the parent and turning the the children over to family members. Perry Gerson and other Democrats held rallies to stop breaking up families, they wanted the family held together in detention centers. The end of Trumps policy even lead to illegal immigrants stealing children to get in to the country easier. This is why DNA test are now done on some parents before handing over children.

Spinny: I'll grant you that some undocumented children went into government custody during the Obama administration, as opposed to the period during the Trump administration when ALL children were taken into custody.

From politifact....... Parscale tweeted, "Fact: Over 90,000 kids were detained under Obama. And no one cared."

The 90,000 children refers to the unaccompanied minors from Central America during Obama’s tenure. Children were detained by the federal government until they could be released to a parent or other caregiver in the U.S.

However, Parscale omits that this group of children detained is a different situation from the recent Trump administration policy. The 90,000 refers ...more

So why was there a court order, prior to Trump getting elected, that children could not be held indefinitely in detention centers?
Why did Gershon and many other Democrats hold "family seperation" rallies? Because Trump was not keeping children in detention centers but giving them to other family members.
Why was Obamas official policy to hold children for 21 days and then release them with mother or other family member?
To say Trump kept "ALL children" is the opposite of what his policy ...more
By Spinny OHO (91), Speonk on Mar 1, 19 8:02 AM
The court order was in reference to Reno v Flores. It wasn’t about separating familys, as trumps administration did. In Obama’s case it was unaccompanied children. Trumps policy was meant to be punitive to stem the flow of immigrants. Two completely different points.
By Fred s (2599), Southampton on Mar 1, 19 8:52 AM
Spinny: That's false. The zero tolerance policy meant everyone was criminally charged and kept in custody. The family separation policy meant all people who were criminally charged were also separated from their children but both the parents and children were kept in custody.

Thankfully Trump changed the policy after public outcry but that doesn't mean it didn't happen to all families, whereas during the Obama years it only happened when children were thought to be at risk with from their ...more

So the first comments anti-Trumpers say that Trump kept the children "in cages". The last two comments they say that the children were seperated as punishment.
Their arguement went totally opposite. They are making up fake facts as they go along.
Cant tell if they are being hypocrites or intentionally misleading.
By Spinny OHO (91), Speonk on Mar 3, 19 9:43 PM
I can't tell if you realize that there are different policies at play or not.

"Zero tolerance" means everyone who enters illegally is charged with a crime.

If people are charged with crimes, their children are removed from them.

If their children are removed then they are in government custody.

Now, because of the outcry, not everyone is charged with a crime so families aren't indiscriminately separated like they were earlier in the Trump administration.

This was rated mostly false by Politifact. Among other issues, this estimate includes the benefits received by US-born children but doesn't account for the taxes they contribute once they start working, and it also includes the cost of border security, as if we shouldn't be funding CBP to keep the costs of illegal immigration down.

By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (6687), HAMPTON BAYS on Feb 27, 19 12:02 PM
Your view is incorrect. Criminals inherently don't target police, but yes, lae enforcement is inherently at risk of violence by virtue of their profession. Criminals don't want the heat of the man upon them as that would bring attention to the criminal enterprise. The act of targeting is a personal act, begotten of the worst of the worst and as in the case noted above, a special kind of depravity that is not the norm.
By Po Boy (4282), Water Mill on Feb 27, 19 12:56 PM
You seem to be making a broad, all-encompassing statement about all criminals whereas I am simply suggesting that while some criminals don't target law enforcement specifically, there's a non-zero number who do, hence the ever-present risk.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (6687), HAMPTON BAYS on Feb 27, 19 1:01 PM
A broad sweeping statement is accurate. Criminals by nature don't want police attention, and as such, don't target them. Unlike yourself who categorized it as "always at risk of being targeted." no where did I say it was universally, "all" criminals, only that it was not the norm.
By Po Boy (4282), Water Mill on Feb 27, 19 1:09 PM
So if we agree that some "Criminals inherently don't target police", that would seem to imply that we agree some DO.

Hence the ever-present risk.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (6687), HAMPTON BAYS on Feb 27, 19 1:15 PM
But we don't agree the risk has remained constant over time. The new dynamic of MS-13 - the lowest of the low - HAS increased that risk. The advent of MS-13 and it's motives IS new.

By Po Boy (4282), Water Mill on Feb 27, 19 1:48 PM

Godspeed and safe travels to all law enforcement everywhere because ALL officers are ALWAYS at risk.
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (6687), HAMPTON BAYS on Mar 4, 19 12:20 PM
Yes, ALL officers are ALWAYS at risk. Correct. Crimes that happen (after the fact) are news.

However, information to the possibility of particularly heinous acts (before the fact) are also news worthy. One would think the public being aware of the possibility of such acts especially given that homes were being watched, would be consistent with - "see something, say something."

Naaah, better we don't cover it, leave the public clueless, and wait to report it after the cop and family ...more
By Po Boy (4282), Water Mill on Mar 4, 19 1:36 PM
Isn't "see something, say something" about giving law enforcement actionable intelligence?

Don't the officers already know about that actionable intelligence before we do?

Aren't they responding appropriately whether or not the public is in the loop?

Eric Holder insisted on Tuesday evening that “a sitting president can be indicted.”

If our Judicial system weren't so corrupt, Mr. "Fast and Furious" Holder would be in Gitmo or some other Federal Penitentiary - for Treason.

He would be spending time with the rest of the Traitors from the previous Administration, along with the ones in this current communist infested Administration.

It still depends on what is meant by "The Wall", particularly in places where there are environmental concerns and landowner objections.

In a hypothetical situation where those concerns and objections didn't exist, and that construction could be completed at zero cost, sure.

In a major correction issued LATE ON A FRIDAY EVENING, The Post MORE THAN A MONTH AFTER THE JANUARY 18 INCIDENT FINALLY addressed inaccuracies, mischaracterizations and falsehoods in their initial coverage. So what is taking that little weasel Brian Stelter from CNN so long?

Since I obliged YOUR question and all...
By Fore1gnBornHBgrown (6687), HAMPTON BAYS on Mar 4, 19 9:17 AM
A hate crime is a crime committed on the basis of a persons race, religion, sexual orientation....

Do I think faking a hate crime is a hate crime? No I do not. However I think it should be considered as serious a crime as a real hate crime. That’s just my personal opinion.

I do believe in most jurisdictions it’s illegal to fake a hate crime if it includes making a false report to the police.

He was due to go on an Australian speaking tour alongside Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes and Milo Yiannopoulos this month, but the event was postponed because the trio have not been granted visas. Supporters had paid up to A$995 (£563) to attend the tour, which was originally scheduled for December. By Sturgis (572), Southampton on Mar 18, 19 1:14 PM
Can you highlight the double standard? Did her campaign benefit from donations from Palestinian lobbyists?

If she did (I'm leaving it to you to figure that one out) would criticism of those donations be Islamophobic?

Jews that call Israel an apartheid state are irrational liars and should be ashamed
Jews that push the lie that other Jews control America with Benjamin’s are a disgrace.

Is the "Arab" lobby more powerful than the "Jewish" lobby? By what metric?

I also wouldn't call AIPAC part of the "Jewish" lobby but part of the Israeli lobby. I understand you don't see a distinction between Israeli and Jewish, but I do.

Let it be known, Fred is in favor of socialism, typical of where the Democratic Party is.

We're not surprised, we've seen it coming. Donald Trump has exposed them for what they are.

JFK is surely rolling over in his grave.

I never said capitalism was perfect, that would be your conclusion. But it is the best system and the result of the most prosperity the world has seen.

Your socialism on the other hand...

I don't think I said you did, I'm just reminding you of the facts as they are. Neither socialism nor capitalism are perfect. That's why we don't subscribe fully to either one.

"Neither socialism nor capitalism are perfect"

LMAO...But which is less imperfect, comrade?

Oh, that's right, Democrats want the "good" socialism, not the "bad" socialism and in the process, give up the system that has afforded the greatest economic opportunity the world has ever know.

Po boy, my comment had zero to do with socialism. It’s about taxes, which we all pay. If you think it’s socialism to have a balanced budget, there’s nothing more to say to you. Trickle down economics is a con perpetuated by the rich , you voted in trump. Now go look at the deficit, it’s whacked. Nothing to do with socialism, more with common sense.
By Fred s (2599), Southampton on Mar 9, 19 10:17 AM
Not even close to the "greatest economic opportunity" in a rigged system. Even billionaires are acknowledging it, folks.

When 40% of Americans can’t afford basic needs, or a $400 emergency, the problem isn’t unique. It’s systemic.

Not good for anyone. Even billionaires know they can’t shield themselves from this kind of perilous instability.

Section 793(f) makes it a felony for any person “entrusted with… information relating to the national defense” to allow that information to be “removed from its proper place of custody” through “gross negligence.”
