Submissions Wanted For The Parrish's 'Artists Choose Artists' Exhibition

Once every three years, the Parrish Art Museum presents “Artists Choose Artists,” an exhibition in which renowned established artists act as jurors in selecting two East End artists for inclusion in the show.

The triennial exhibition highlights the dynamic relationships uniting the area’s creative community and it encourages mentorship and conversation between artists at varying stages in their careers. It also fosters fellowship among today’s expanded, multi-generational network of artists and demonstrates the diversity of contemporary creative practice.

Submissions for this year’s “Artists Choose Artists” show are being accepted through May 31. Artists working in any media who are residents of the East End may submit an application. Juror selections will be announced in August.

The seven distinguished juror artists this year are Lillian Ball, Ralph Gibson, Valerie Jaudon, Jill Moser, Alexis Rockman, Lucien Smith, and Allan Wexler. Each juror will select two artists, based on online submissions and subsequent studio visits. Work by the jurors and the 14 selected artists will be on view at the Parrish from November 10 to January 26.

In a recent interview, Mr. Rockman, whose “East End Field Drawings” exhibition was featured in 2015 at the Parrish, weighed in on his job as a juror and the role artists have historically played in the creative life of this area. As he considers his two participants for the show, he said that he will be looking for artists who demonstrate a long haul commitment to their chosen field.

“As artists, we are part of a tradition that includes a relationship to the beautiful landscape that is unique to the East End,” he said, adding that mentorship is an important part of growing as an artist. “I was very lucky to be in some great shows with figures from art history very young … it was very affirming.”
