In the great era of print journalism two brilliant, gritty and controversial New York City newspapermen—Jimmy Breslin and Pete Hamill—built their formidable careers as columnists for the New York Herald Tribune, Daily News, New York Post and Newsday.

On Sunday, May 5, Hamptons Doc Fest will partner with the Press Club of Long Island for a screening of “Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Artists,” at the Southampton Arts Center.

The 2018 HBO documentary was directed by Jonathan Alter, John Block and Steve McCarthy, and it follows the intersecting lives, triumphs, tragedies, and five-decade careers of Mr. Hamill and the late Mr. Breslin, who died in 2017. The film draws directly from rare archival footage, family archives, and interviews with both columnists as well as major figures on the New York and national journalism scene. The movie also follows Mr. Hamill and Mr. Breslin to the Hamptons as they retreat to rented beach homes in search of peace and quiet to write their novels.

Present for the Q&A will be the film’s co-director and director of cinematography Steve McCarthy, and Jimmy Breslin’s son Patrick Breslin, in conversation with Brendan O’Reilly, a board member of the Press Club of Long Island and the features editor of The Southampton Press and The East Hampton Press.

Tickets are $10 at hamptonsdocfest.com, southamptonartscenter.org, or at the door. Southampton Arts Center is at 25 Jobs Lane in Southampton Village.
