Legendary saxophonist Tom Scott will perform a one night only concert at the Southampton Arts Center (SAC) on June 27 with Combo Nuvo, a world jazz combo. This is an extraordinary opportunity to see a living legend live in concert alongside one of the most innovative bands in New York City.

An original member of the Blues Brothers band with John Belushi and Dan Akroyd, and a L.A. session musician since the 1970’s, saxophonist/composer Tom Scott has dozens of solo recordings and 13 Grammy nominations (he won three). He also has numerous film and television scoring credits, including for the movie “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes,” and he appeared on records by artists such as George Harrison, the Beach Boys, the Grateful Dead, Paul McCartney, Steppenwolf, Rod Stewart, Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand, Joni Mitchell, Blondie, Eddie Money, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Quincy Jones, Carole King, and Frank Sinatra, to name a few. He was a founding member of the Blues Brothers Band, despite his absence in the two films.

His best-known works are the theme songs for TV series “Starsky and Hutch” and “The Streets of San Francisco.” In 1976 he played the theme “I Still Can’t Sleep” in the film “Taxi Driver.”

Combo Nuvo was created to explore the diverse experiences of musicians who have traveled across the globe, bringing their influences back home to Greenwich Village where they work and play. The brainchild of Dave Schroeder and Rich Shemaria, their premise was simple—let’s combine our favorite music with our favorite musicians and see what happens. They brought unique instruments from around the world into the group, finding new ways to write and arrange for them. Playing in tiny bistros and coffee houses around the Village during the late ‘90s, the group began to find their sound. Their unique blend was created using instruments like the chromatic harmonica & blues harp, acoustic guitar, cello, Middle Eastern percussion, piano & synthesizers, jaw harp, penny whistle, flutes, clarinets and saxophones. Featured artists in this show are Dave Schroeder, Rich Shemaria, Mark McIntyre and Jerry DeVore.

The concert will be recorded for future broadcast on the NPR station WPPB 88.3FM.

Combo Nuvo and Tom Scott perform on Thursday, June 27 at 7 p.m. at Southampton Arts Center, 25 Job’s Lane, Southampton. Admission is $15 ($12 for Friends of SAC). The concert is presented in conjunction with The Jam Session of the Hamptons, Keyed Up and The Jazz Foundation of America. For more information, contact southamptonartscenter.org.
