An antique kimono in the collection of J.Z. Holden.

East End author J.Z. Holden is a collector of antique hand-painted and embroidered Japanese kimonos and haori (thigh-length kimonos). On Friday, June 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Ms. Holden will host a one-day trunk show of her antique kimonos, some of which are more than a century old, at Salon Xavier, 1 Bay Street, Sag Harbor.

“Kimonos were created at the same time as Samurai, during a politically unstable time, when Japan was divided into small feudal states overseen by tyrannical overlords,” Ms. Holden stated. “The kimonos worn at court were elaborate, flashy, multi-layered, and made of the most exquisite silks, sewn with gold and silver thread and hand painted in actual gold.

“They are passed down from one generation to the next and are considered precious family heirlooms. The fact that they are hot at this specific moment in time, in western culture, and in the fractured US in particular, is a reflection of what is going on with women—consciously or unconsciously.”
