Before the days of privet hedges and specimen trees, much of the terrain in East Hampton was extremely flat, allowing extended views of the ocean and bays.
An exhibit of photographs depicting how the landscape appeared before mansions loomed so large opened on Friday in the Mulford Barn at 10 James Lane in East Hampton Village. Organized by the East Hampton Historical Society, the show, called “Barnscapes,” includes photos dating from 1890 to 1930, when homesteads were typically no taller than the barns sitting nearby.
The show will run through July 24. More information is available from Isabel Carmichael, (631) 324-6850; the Historical Society’s website is www.easthamptonhistory.org.
