Georgica Beach To Reopen On Friday

Jun 26, 2012 4:54 PM

Georgica Beach will reopen for swimming on Friday, East Hampton Village Mayor Paul F. Rickenbach Jr. said on Monday morning. The beach, which was severely eroded by Tropical Storm Irene, has been restored to the point that there is enough space to accommodate a lifeguard stand again.

“As this beach continues to improve, we hope we will able to maintain this for the
remainder of the summer season,” the mayor said in a press release.

The village set up a lifeguard stand and temporary restrooms at Wiborg Beach starting on Memorial Day weekend because Georgica did not at that time have enough sand for protected swimming.

Larry Cantwell, the village administrator, said on Monday that beginning Friday there
will be no lifeguards at Wiborg, but that the restrooms
would stay “as a small
insurance policy” in case the situation at Georgica goes downhill. If the beach at Georgica continues to rebuild, the restrooms at Wiborg will be removed, Mr. Cantwell said. “For now, Georgica looks good,” he said.
