East Hampton Man Tries To Steal Car, Gets Caught By K-9 Unit

Nov 26, 2013 9:35 AM

Suffolk County Police helicopters put East Hampton Village under a spotlight on Thursday evening, November 21, searching for a man who officers said tried to steal a pickup truck from a home on Buell Lane Extension. A K-9 unit sniffed the man out after an hour-long search, according to East Hampton Village Police.

James G. Sbardella, 33, was arrested that night by East Hampton Village Police after he was found just a few doors down from where he had allegedly attempted to steal the truck.

The search began at 8:40 p.m. when the suspect fled from the truck’s owner, who caught him in the act and tried to restrain him until police arrived.

East Hampton Town Police aided the search by establishing a perimeter and reaching out to other departments. Riverhead Town Police responded with their K-9 unit, and Suffolk County Police sent out a helicopter, which could be heard hovering around the East Hampton train station on Railroad Avenue until it was called back an hour later, when police apprehended the man.

East Hampton Village Police Chief Jerry Larsen said the K-9 unit “flushed him right out” and found him hiding in the bushes at a nearby home where he was apprehended.

Mr. Sbardella was arrested at 10:28 p.m. by Village Police and charged with burglary in the second degree, a felony, attempted grand larceny in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Police said he stole liquor from 10 Talmage Lane on November 11 and that he is wanted in Lake City, Florida, for violating his parole stemming from a burglary charge there. “I believe [a police department from Lake City] will eventually come pick him up,” Chief Larsen said.

Mr. Sbardella, who is currently homeless and has been living along the railroad tracks, according to the chief, was arraigned on Friday morning in East Hampton Town Justice Court. Town Justice Lisa Rana set his bail at $10,000.

It's always amusing to me when people in the act of committing crimes, also have drugs or drug paraphenlia on them. Like, leave the baggie of weed at home and you would save yourself a charge dummy!

Also, great work by EHPD calling in the right resources

None of these geniuses ever think they will get caught of course.

Strange that this article doesn't have as many comments as the one regarding the Hispanics robbing the consignment shop. I wonder why that could be?

Regardless, he's still "at large" in one sense...

According to the EH Star this guy was caught in the act by a man who then beat the crap out of him. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

Hey woods woman, in many places the guy would have been shot dead. He wasn't beating the crap out of him, he was protecting his family. You have got to be kidding me with your comment. How would you feel if someone violated you and your family, and this wasn't the first time. This was the guys route and he was looking to make another score. What would you have done, invited him in for a cocktail??? Way to go picker!!!

Last I knew we were a little more civilized here and did not shoot people dead in the streets. And I am not kidding you with my comment..I don't believe in beating the crap out of someone until he begs you to stop..call me silly. The police are there to handle the tough stuff...call them next time. And I don't drink but I cook..egg on your face.
