Adele Haney of East Hampton died at home on April 4. She was 93.
A lifelong resident of East Hampton, she was born on July 19, 1920, to John H. and Florence (Field) Collins.
In the 1950s, Ms. Haney ran her own hairdressing business, as well as helping her husband with the family business known as the Royal Food Market. In 1959, the market became East Hampton IGA Foodliner. In 1960, she closed her hairdressing business to help her family with the IGA Foodliner full time, working there until her son sold it in 1998.
In retirement she kept busy with maintaining her house, as well as by aiding and helping people. She drove friends to doctor appointments, shopped for people and picked up friends’ mail on occasion, among other things, survivors said. She was also a caregiver for her sister, Margaret Wade, in her last years.
Survivors said Ms. Haney always wanted to feel useful and that she once said that the best way to do that was to be available for her family and friends. She enjoyed being with her family and friends, and every day at around 1 p.m., visitors, including family, friends and people she had met over the years at the IGA, would drop in for coffee or tea.
Ms. Haney was predeceased by her husband, Hulton. She is survived by a son, John A. Haney and wife Bonnie of East Hampton; three grandchildren, Dawn Haney, Jennifer O’Connor and Chris O’Connor; a niece and godchild, Lynn Ammon; three nieces, Donna Johnston, Martha Renfro and Cherry Fishburne; a great-niece, Virginia Ammon Zlatniski; a great-great-nephew, Jack Zlatniski; and a sister-in-law, Colleen Reed.
A funeral was held on April 9 at Most Holy Trinity Church in East Hampton. Arrangements were under the direction of the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home in East Hampton.
Memorial donations may be made to East Hampton Ambulance, 1 Cedar Street, East Hampton, NY 11937 or the American Legion Post #419, 15 Montauk Highway, Amagansett, NY 11930.
