Early figures from a state-funded study of a network of interconnecting rail and bus lines on the East End show that the ambitious original concept could cost $247 million, so local transportation advocates working on the project are examining a less expensive alternative.
The Volpe Study, commissioned by the five East End towns in 2007, weighs the concept of a series of bus lines connecting to existing Long Island Rail Road stops. It is being performed by The Volpe Center, a federally funded intermodal transportation research firm in Massachusetts.
Southampton Town’s Director of Public Transportation and Traffic Safety Tom Neely and several members of a committee working with The Volpe Center presented preliminary findings to the East Hampton Town Board at a work session Tuesday morning.
