Campaign notebook: East Hampton GOP opens headquarters

Aug 11, 2009 6:38 PM

The East Hampton Town Republicans have opened a campaign office on Newtown Lane and will hold a grand opening celebration next Monday, August 17.

From 5 to 7 p.m., GOP supervisor candidate Bill Wilkinson, Town Board candidates Theresa Quigley and Dominick Stanzione, highway superintendent candidate Tom Talmage, Town Clerk candidate Fred Overton and Tax Assessor candidate Eugene DePasquale will be on hand at the headquarters to talk with voters about their positions.

The office is located behind the Capital One bank at 40A Newtown Lane and will be open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. throughout the campaign season.

Republican position papers, bumper stickers, voter information, absentee ballots and voter registration cards will also be available at the headquarters. The campaign headquarters can be reached at 604-1938 or on the web at ehnygop.com.

East Hampton Town Democratic Committee chairman Bill Taylor said this week that the Democrats do not yet have any plans to open a campaign headquarters. The party is currently planning a major fund-raiser that will be held between the end of August and September 19.

“We’re working out the details. We’re trying to have Attorney General Cuomo come down and a few heavyweights,” he said.

Mr. Taylor also said that the party’s accountant has figured out an anomaly in the New York State Board of Elections records that has shown since the beginning of the year that the town’s Democratic Party had a deficit of more than $9,600.

Mr. Taylor said that he believes many receipts from the party’s Campaign 2007 committee, which showed a balance of about $11,200 at its last filing in January of 2008, were wrongfully attributed to the Democratic Committee, making it appear that the party had a negative balance in the bank. He said that the party’s accountant is working to fix the records.

The Democrats have also posted a new website, EastHamptonDemocrats.org, for the upcoming campaign.

On the site, biographical information about the party’s candidates and detailed information about the candidates’ positions on a variety of issues can be found. It also contains information on how to get involved in the East Hampton Democrats’ efforts and how to donate to the campaign. In addition, information on how to register to vote is included.

The website will be updated throughout the campaign with additional information and positions on issues.

By the way - and shame on this reporter for not asking - who exactly is the "party's accountant"? Last I heard the Treasurer is David Gruber . . .I don't want to spread any misinformation - so is this correct?

Oh, and how about the De Menille's, their contributions to the current Town (Democrat) Board Members Deb Foster and Brad Loewan, and, oh joy! our new "Historic Town Hall" with a write off for them and millions of dollars of debt for us. FACT: Dan's Paper's reported that Judith Hope and Tom Twomey beamed with pride as the buildings were moved from their property to OURS. Paperwork shows (if anyone cares tio investigate) that the costs of moving these buildings have not been fully reimbursed by ...more
