East Hampton Library budget passes by a wide margin

Apr 20, 2010 1:45 PM

The East Hampton Library’s 2011 budget passed by a three-to-one margin on Saturday, April 17.

The library’s $1.79 million 2011 budget reflects a 2.2-percent spending increase and a 6-percent tax increase, which is expected to cost taxpayers, on average, $4.51 more per year.

Overall, the budget received a total of 454 yes votes and 173 no votes, to pass with 72 percent of the vote.

Voters in Springs gave the library the most overwhelming support with 80 percent of voters supporting the budget, which passed by a 111-to-27-vote margin. In East Hampton, 327 voters, or 70 of those who cast ballots, supported the budget, while 141 voters voted against it. Wainscott voters passed the measure by a 16 to 5 vote.

The vote results closely mirrored the 2009 turnout, when voters approved a 9.6-percent tax increase by a tally of 453 to 178. Prior to 2009, the library had not held a budget vote for three years because it had not raised taxes during that time due to its powerhouse fund-raising efforts.

“The library staff, board of managers and I are very happy with the overwhelming approval of our budget by the residents,” said Library Director Dennis Fabiszak this week. “A total approval of 3 to 1, highlighted by an approval of 4 to 1 by Springs residents, is a clear message from the voters that we are providing the library services that they want. The approval of this budget will allow us to purchase more books, DVDs, CDs and to provide more free programs for residents of all ages.”
