New Effort To Repeal Fishing Licenses

New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele Jr. and State Senator Lee M. Zeldin have introduced a new bill that would repeal the New York State Saltwater Fishing License law.

The lawmakers hope the bill will fare better than an earlier effort to repeal the much maligned license law because of new leadership in the State Senate and the governors office and the court ruling this winter that deemed the license requirement unenforceable in seven Long Island towns.

“There is a traditional view of fishing we have on the East End that you shouldn’t have to pay a fee to throw your line in the water,” Mr. Thiele said. “And recreational fishing is a big part of our economy and every imposition we put on it is something that adversely impacts our tourist... more

Way to go gentlemen! The federal law requires a REGISTRY, not a license !Our ellected weasels in Albany with their gestapo the DEC saw it as a way to make a few bucks. Fortunately for us on the east end, based on the Dongan Patent, the license proposal was beaten in court. How much money did that ost the State?

Oh please. This is just grandstanding. The Dongan Patent ensures free fishing - just read the d-thing. The state was just looking for a quick way to make money to pay for the DEC, but it wasn't legal and couldn't be applied here. The Trustees of all the eastern towns got together last year took care of it. This is a dead issue.

The Dongan Patent also provided for the raising of taxes.
If you have a body of water that is frequented by people (fishermen/women) how do you pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the waterways? What is wrong with paying for the privilege to fish? You want to fish for free because of a treaty written in 1686? Get real. This is not gestapo tactics but rather land stewardship. But then perhaps you think the National Parks System is a rip off as well. Pay to play.

Fishing in the Town of Southampton isn't a 'privilege" for residents, it's a right! I will not give up my rights to the State, a right we have fought for and won, time and again. The Patent is as real as it gets, and the authority it grants our Trustees has been upheld in NY State Supreme Court on more than one occasion. Ths DEC is an unregulated, appointed agency with far reaching police powers and has been known to misuse these powers and employ gestapo like tactics.

To Goldenrod and Waterman: It is not a "dead issue" as the fee would still apply to all others who are NOT within Trustee shores (i.e. Montauk and anywhere else in Suffolk County that is not under the Dongan/Nichols Patent). However, thanks to the persistent efforts of these elected officials, a money-grabbing "tax' may very well be avoided. Kudos to them! Fact is Towns/Trustees can provide "data" FOR FREE for a registry - no fees involved. If you'er so happy to pay, Waterman, go ahead and DONATE ...more
