A pending referendum that will determine whether or not the East Quogue School District can spend $250,000 to buy land next door to the elementary school has created a bit of confusion among some of the hamlet’s taxpayers.
At last week’s Board of Education meeting, several attendees expressed concerns that many of the hamlet’s senior citizens will not be in East Quogue for the referendum, which is scheduled for Tuesday, February 28, explaining that many of the older residents will be in warmer climates and some might not even know about the vote. Additionally, those in attendance said most of the hamlet’s “snowbirds” probably will not even learn about the referendum until they return from their winter homes in the spring.

They are informed, I find it very hard to believe these people go to Florida for several months and cut themselves off from all knowledge of happenings in this hamlet.
They have been notified, period. It is up to them to get an absentee ballot and send it in, period. If you know of someone that may honestly not know whats going on, be a concerned ...more citizen and contact them please. That would be helpful and you can pat yourself on the back for being involved.
In my opinion, this is one of the few things being done by the school board that makes sense. The property is being sold way below market value. If you think you don't need it now, you may need it in the future. And what are you going to buy then, and what will it cost then? Much, much, more.

Once in the past the district had a $$400K+ surplus and decreased enrollment. The Board's proposal at that time to spend the money on expansion was voted down by residents so the Board moved the money from one bookkeeping category to another and spent it anyway.
The ...more EQ School Board is composed of fecund parents of children in the school. When the choice is between improving the educational environment for their kids or deferring to the financial limitations of the community, there is no choice.
Residents should only vote for this proposal if the Board can make its case based on OBJECTIVE data. (Although it may be irrelevant if they repeat history.)
People are going to vote for it.
Your negative feelings toward this, the school board, taxes etc. are very strong.
Have you ever thought of moving to someplace that would be more to your standards?
