After earning 30 merit badges, completing 10 years of Scouting, and living by the Boy Scout oath, Corey McGuinness has only one more feat to accomplish before he can be called an Eagle Scout: completing a large-scale community service project.
For his project, the 16-year-old Eastport resident, who is also a member of Boy Scout Troop 221, will replace a dilapidated slate walkway at Calverton National Cemetery, a facility that caters mainly to veterans and their families.
He noted that the uneven walkway could pose a hazard to senior citizens visiting deceased loved ones at the cemetery. “It’s between a bridge and the main site, and it slopes down,” Corey said of the walkway that he intends to replace. “We’re re-leveling it.”
