Eastport Community Notes, January 5

Jan 3, 2012 12:41 PM

Happy 2012. I like saying “Twenty-Twelve.” It has a nice ring to it! Hope your New Year has a nice ring to it, too.

By the end of December, the Christmas decorations inside and outside the house begin to look as tired as the people around them. Plastic snowmen and Santas have fallen down and can’t get up, those blow-up lawn decorations have lost their air and lay flat and, well, deflated, the word JOY on a lawn has lost its J and now just says OY, and parts of strings of lights on houses have gone out and remain unlit. Inside, Christmas villages are dusty, live trees are losing needles rapidly and the baked goods are mere crumbs.

Time to put everything away and start fresh. January is here and there is lots going on starting with some events on the school calendar at Eastport South Manor:

Thursday, January 5: There will be an informational meeting at 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria regarding recent changes in the educational program for the district’s seventh- and eighth-graders.

Thursday, January 12: The Eastport South Manor Community for the Arts (ESMCA) will host an Alumni Film Festival that’s being organized by Ms. Cassidy and Eric Striffler. This event will start at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Tuesday, January 17, and Thursday, January 19: A Defensive Driving Course is being sponsored by ESMCA and the Manorville Chamber of Commerce. Registration forms are available at

Monday, January 23: The ESMCA will hold a general membership meeting at 7 p.m. in the ESM Black Box. Please note that all parents of the cast, crew and pit for the spring musical, “West Side Story,” should plan to attend this very important meeting.

Friday, January 27: The district will host “Mangia Italia Night!” in the cafeteria of the junior-senior high school from 5:30 until 9 p.m. Please join the community for what is sure to be a fun night that includes great spaghetti, student artwork displays and performances, and a “Mamma Contest.” Tickets and additional details are available at

The Eastport South Manor Music Boosters will meet on Wednesday, January 11, at 7:15 p.m., in the Board of Education meeting room at the high school to discuss the volleyball marathon scheduled for Sunday, January 29, and a trip to see a New York Islanders game in early February. Members will also be making plans for the HMEA Festival in January and will need LOTS of volunteers to help out with the festival!
