The Eastport South Manor girls lacrosse team was defeated for the first time this season over the break, with an 11-5 loss at home to undefeated Shoreham/Wading River on Friday.
Even with the loss, the Lady Sharks sit in fourth place in Division II, as of Tuesday morning, with a 5-1 overall record. Shoreham/Wading River (5-0), a Class C team this season, is one of two teams still undefeated in Division II. Hauppauge (6-0) is also undefeated.
ESM head coach Becky Thorn said her team was scared to lose, which is never a good thing going into a game.
“We totally weren’t on our game,” she said. “Shoreham was phenomenal, I give them a lot of credit. They were all over the place. Everywhere the ball was, at least three girls were there for them. And we kind of fell apart.”
ESM was down just two goals after the first half but was shut out in the second half. It was the first time the Lady Sharks were shut out in a half since the regular season opener of last season against Hauppauge.
Thorn said the second half shutout was a little bit of Shoreham playing extremely well and her team not playing particularly well at all. “They were on fire and we were never down, before this game, at halftime,” she said. “Even in our game at Mount Sinai we weren’t down, we always had the lead. So I think that brought us down a bit.”
Thorn appreciated the play of freshman goalie Samantha Giacolone and sophomore Dakota Mason who never gave up throughout the game. Senior Anjelica Fuccillo was the only Lady Shark who scored multiple goals with two.ON THE SCHEDULE: Tuesday, 4/17, vs. Bayport/Blue Point; Thursday, 4/19, at Sayville, 4 p.m.; Monday, 4/23, at Islip, 4 p.m.
