UPDATE: Friday, 7:45 a.m.

Suffolk County Police said the original press release issued on Thursday night misidentified the driver of the F-350 who was uninjured as Chase Evarhart.

On Friday morning, police corrected the record and said the driver's name was Dawson Everhart.

ORIGINAL STORY:

An 84-year-old man who was involved in a two-vehicle crash on Eastport Manor Road in Eastport on Thursday night has died.

Suffolk County Police said Gerald Bennett of East Moriches was exiting the King Kullen parking lot at 25 Eastport Manor Road in a 2009 Honda CRV at approximately 5:10 p.m., when he collided with a northbound 2008 Ford F-350 being driven by Chase Evarhart, 19, of Westhampton.

Both vehicles ended up in the U.S. Post Office parking lot across the street from the King Kullen supermarket, with Mr. Bennett’s vehicle on its side.

Police said Mr. Bennett was taken by East Moriches Community Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead. Mr. Evarhart was uninjured and remained at the scene of the accident.

Police said both vehicles were impounded for a safety check and the investigation is ongoing.

Suffolk County detectives ask that anyone with information about the accident call 631-852-8752.

Exiting that parking lot has been very difficult since they added the large green signs at the entrance. It blocks your view when entering the road on both sides

Very tough stretch of road to pull out of parking lots...especially in the afternoon with sun glare. New 70' utility poles will be effective car-stopping mechanisms.
