U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin has hit a roadblock in his attempt to create separate zip codes for the hamlets of Flanders, Riverside and Northampton, communities that will continue to share Riverhead Town’s 11901 zip code.

Mr. Zeldin relaunched efforts to create the separate zip codes in order to cut down on confusion among postal carriers earlier this year. But last month, a manager at the U.S. Postal Service on Long Island informed the congressman that his request had been denied.

On October 13, Mr. Zeldin filed an appeal with the Postmaster General’s office in Washington, D.C., according to his communications director, Jennifer DiSiena.

The need for separate zip codes stems primarily from the issue of duplicate street names within the same zip code. “The shared zip code causes a number of issues in the local community, including the delay of important goods like medications, and also causes serious issues for police, first responders [and] other emergency personnel, who may arrive at the wrong address due to these shared street names with the same zip code,” Ms. DiSiena wrote in a prepared statement.

Mr. Zeldin wants to meet with Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan face to face so he can explain how important this is to the community, she added.

“We will keep pushing on this very important local issue,” Ms. DiSiena said. “We are expecting a response from the Postmaster General’s office shorty.”
