Police seize marijuana plants, guns in Flanders

Dec 9, 2009 12:49 PM

A Flanders man was arrested after police said they found more than 20 marijuana plants and a small arsenal of guns in his home on Monday.

Southampton Town Police arrested Carl V. Tarello Jr., 41, after a brief investigation led them to obtain a search warrant for his Hart Avenue home. Officers with the department’s Street Crimes Unit searched the house at about 10:30 a.m. on Monday and found the plants, along with approximately 3 pounds of bagged marijuana, four illegal handguns, 13 rifles and approximately 30,000 rounds of ammunition. They also found a drug scale, drug packaging materials, and marijuana growing lamps and equipment, according to police.

Police said Mr. Tarello had a designated growing room in his basement and that most of the plants were about three weeks away from harvesting. Mr. Tarello told officers he had been growing marijuana legally in California before he moved to New York in March, and that he thought it was legal to grow it here as well. Police also said Mr. Tarello cooperated with officers during his arrest.

Mr. Tarello was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, both felonies, as well as unlawfully growing marijuana and two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, both misdemeanors.

He was arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court on Monday and released from Suffolk County Jail in Riverside after posting $2,500 bail.
